My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

7/7/15 Update: One of our volunteer brought Patches to and from her vet appointment today. She said that Patches looks great! She has been groomed and brushed. She is beautiful and gentle. Patches was happy to see Nancy and had no hesitation getting into the car, nor was there hesitation or shyness once they arrived at the clinic. Nancy took her for a little walk, and she did her "business" outside the clinic, with no accidents inside. The vet said she is much better too - calm and responsive at the vet visit. The vet feels she will do pretty well with heartworm treatment because she is more relaxed now and not hyper and hard to keep quiet. Patches has made real progress in her emotional state! She is such a love - everyone at the clinic wants to adopt her!

6/11/15 Update: Patches, our little diamond in the rough, is making nice progress in her foster home. After initial nervousness she is settling down and is more relaxed each day. She is learning about leash walking, and she loves her walks along the Cape Cod Canal. Her Foster Mom says she likes all the dogs she has met, large and small, male and female. And she loves kids even more! Whenever she sees a child she wants to rush over to say hello. Patches is eating fine, and stays by herself at home without trouble. She is very loving and skips over to greet anyone who shows her attention. Patches will benefit from basic training and guidance in her adoptive home, and this little girl wants so much to learn and to please!
Medically, she has cleared some hurdles and is currently on antibiotics in preparation for starting her heartworm treatment. She will be able to undergo the shorter-duration treatment, then be spayed and ready for her forever home.

Patches' Story: We received word from a woman that she wanted to relinquish a Golden to SGRR, because the dog barked and howled incessantly. A victim of a divorce, Patches had been her son’s dog and was only allowed outside about 4 hours a day, in a pen; that is if she didn’t bark at the neighbors. We suspected this must be a typical Golden who was pleading to be included with her people, rather than left alone in a pen. What we discovered when we met Patches was a sweet and extraordinarily beautiful Golden who had never received much attention, love, or medical care. The poor girl was spending her time alone, either crated inside in a secluded room or outdoors in a very small pen.

Patches is about 4-1/2 years old and now has a clean slate in life. She is loving and craves human attention, but she has much to learn about being a treasured Golden. In spite of her past, she has a pure and happy Golden spirit. At first, she was afraid to get into our volunteers’ cars but once inside, she was a great little rider and she enjoyed the car. She loved treats and took them gently, and she really, really loved being petted and spoken to softly and with kindness.

Patches went straight to a vet for medical evaluation and needs a great deal of medical care before she will be ready for her forever home. Patches had never been spayed, is about 10 lbs. underweight, and her coat is coarse and dull from poor nutrition. She had not been given any vaccinations and she tested positive for heartworm. Heartworm treatment takes weeks and is expensive. We will continue to learn about Patches as we help her feel comfortable with leash walks and living inside a home that is not in a crate. She is currently with an experienced foster family and we will post updates as we learn more about this beauty whose past life broke our hearts.

We are accepting contributions toward Patches’ medical treatment and care. If you would like to help, please use Paypal

Thank you!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
