My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Proby

Proby is a very handsome young black Labrador with a beautiful coat and smile. He is a young boy, about 8 to 10 months old, so we know that he still has some growing up to do. He is rambunctious, but seems smart and eager to learn.

Right now, Proby is a lanky teenager, but he'll fill out as he gets older. He *is* still a puppy. He's not a tiny little puppy, but still a puppy. And what do puppies like to do? Put things in their mouth! So far the only casualty is a dog bed left outside while he was unsupervised (foster mom's fault!) Proby needs to be supervised and watched. A young Lab will quickly "teach" you to pick up anything that you don't want customized by Labrador teeth!

Proby is smart and really food motivated. Training this boy should be pretty easy. He already knows the sit command and was familiar with the hand signal. After seeing the resident Labrador sit for a treat, he figured out it is to his advantage to sit when asked.

Proby is "on probation" so he is watched very closely in the house. When he can't be watched, Proby is crated. He is still getting used to his crate and makes a little bit of a fuss while crated. Just give him a bone to chew on and he'll quiet down.

Proby likes to chew on toys: a tennis ball, a cow femur bone or a Kong (with some peanut butter, please!) It is a good idea to keep a few toys out for him to direct his energy toward. Puppies explore the world with their mouths, and Proby is no exception. He is still a little mouthy, so he will not be a good match for children under the age of about 8 or 9.

Like any young Labrador, Proby needs a family that is willing to give him the time, exercise and training to be a great companion. Labs don't come well behaved naturally, but they do come with plenty of energy and enthusiasm!

Proby will do best in a home with another large breed dog to learn from and play with. He loves to rough house and play chase with other dogs, so he needs a home with a yard to run in. Proby gets along with the resident dog, an older black male Lab. The older dog is showing him the ropes and teaching him some doggy etiquette.

Proby will grow up to be a fine dog. He just needs a family that sees how special he is and will be dedicated to raising him to be a great dog! If you are that family, put in your application TODAY!
