My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ADOPTION PENDING!!

1/21/16
Bear is feeling MUCH better! He takes three short walks each day, his stitches have been removed, and he does not need to wear his Cone of Shame any more! He remains on an anti-inflammatory for a while longer and will be increasing his walking distance over time. His foster mom tells us that Bear does some pulling on a leash and wants to do his own thing, but that he is so super smart he’ll get the hang of it soon. He follows his foster family members everywhere and just loves being with people. He adores his foster dad who sits on the floor and rolls Bear's beloved ball to him or hangs out with him. He has a new favorite blanket that he has claimed as his own. He sleeps on it and digs his face into it. Sunshine thanks everyone who has so generously contributed to Bear's ongoing care as he gets through his rehab and hopes for his forever family soon.

1/9/16 Update:
Bear has shown us that he is a big love, affectionate, and happy whenever he sees his foster family. He sleeps fine throughout the night and greets his family every morning with a big tail wag. Bear shows now food guarding at all, as previously reported to us. They can take food right out of his mouth and give him his medicine easily. They have discovered that Bear loves apples and green beans, and those treats along with low-calorie dog food have helped Bear lose 5 lbs already - very important for his future health! Bear needs your positive thoughts as he recovers from a setback this week, after he opened some sutures which caused an infection. His expenses are mounting and any contributions toward his care will be so welcomed! We will do everything that Bear needs to help him feel well and enjoy chasing his beloved tennis balls again.

BEAR'S STORY:
Bear is an incredibly handsome and sweet 7-year old, 100 lb. Golden Retriever. He has been loved by his family but he needs an expensive surgery which they cannot afford. They tearfully contacted Sunshine to ask if we could get him the surgery he needs, and find him a loving home. We could not refuse to help him. Bear needs knee surgery to repair a torn ACL ligament. This will cost about $4,000 and require two to three months of rehabilitation. A wonderful couple in CT has stepped up to foster him and help him through his rehab.

Bear lived with his original owners from the time he was a young pup. He grew up with four children whom he adored, cats who he was kind to and ignored, and two small dogs. His previous owner told us he guards his food and toys from the smaller dogs. However, when our Sunshine volunteer met Bear, she saw that he eats his dog food out of the same bowl as the smaller dogs, and simply gives a low growl or raises his lip if he wants it to himself. Feeding him separately or letting him chew bones away from other dogs should help. Bear likes to play with a frisbee, and especially loves tennis balls. Even not feeling great and with difficulty getting around, he sits with them and plays on the floor with them!

Bear has been brought up to date on his vaccinations. He takes drops nicely in his right eye every day for tear production. Once he has his knee surgery and loses some extra weight, he is going to be stunning and we hope this beautiful red Golden boy will find a family where he will be happy and enjoy playing ball once again.

Bear is currently on Medical Hold and is not yet available for adoption. Please check back on his progress!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
