My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name is Klay and I am a purebred Yellow Labrador Retriever with papers. I will be two years old in March and I weigh about 90 pounds. Two nice ladies rescued me from my past owner who did not care for me properly. They turned me over to SCLRR and I am so happy! I am surrounded by friendly, loving people and have been given the opportunity to play with other dogs.

Jan and Mike are my foster parents. They have three kids ages 11, 13, and 16. I am great around them and since they are bigger I don’t knock them down. Sometimes I don’t realize just how big I am yet! Jan and Mike have a six year old Labrador mix named Ripple. Ripple and I are buddies and we play well together. I wish the dog bed was bigger because I like to sleep with Ripple but often slip off the dog bed when I fall asleep!

I don’t like sitting for long and follow the family wherever they go. If Jan goes into a room and shuts the door I will bump my head on it to let her know I am waiting for her outside in the hall. I will often roam from room to room just to look for people, toys, or to find Ripple. I don’t like being bored and I prefer to be on the go. I sleep best after playing ball or after my long walks.
My favorite thing to do is go to the park and play fetch. I hop in the car and stay put in the back. I will chase a ball for a very long time before I get tired. I bring it back every time and drop it at Jan’s feet. If Ripple drops her ball I can pick it up and carry two balls in my mouth at a time. If the Frisbee is thrown over my head, I can usually catch it in my mouth! Throw me anything and I will go get it! Jan is teaching me how to sit before and after I go in and out of a room or a car. I am getting good at this. I can also stay for short periods of time, shake, and am learning how to wait for my food before it is served. When I first got here, I just stuck my head in the bag of food because I wanted it and it smelled so good!

I like to roughhouse with Ripple but it’s not such a good idea in the house. If Jan puts me in the backyard with Ripple I stop playing and I want to come back in the house. I am working on breaking a bad habit of barking to get in. Jan is teaching me that I can come in when I sit and stop barking. Since I’m still young and haven’t had much human interaction in the past, I am going to need some more training and reassurance that the backyard is a safe place to be. I like going on a long walks with the family. I am wearing a special collar because I tend to pull and I am very strong. I can walk, and walk, and walk. I definitely need a family that can meet my needs for being outdoors and well exercised.

I am a little unsure about sounds. If I hear a knock on the door, or a sudden sound from upstairs or outside, I will bark letting everyone know that something is going on. Jan has been calling me away from the sounds and reassuring me that it is okay and that seems to be working. Everything is new to me because previously I was not in a homey environment. Jan and Mike take me outside about every hour and say ‘ Go Potty’, and I usually do that on demand! At this point I’m learning alot and they tell me I am a quick learner.

I sleep in a big crate at night. I sometimes have to be given a treat to get in there, because I would rather be out and about. I sleep well when I am in there. I have been getting dog massages from Jan and the kids. I like to thank them for this by resting my paw on their arm. I enjoy chewing on Kong toys stuffed with goodies, bones, chewy treats, and even some random stuffed animals I have found in the house. I will chew on pretty much anything if it is given to me, so it’s best if things that are valuable are tucked away in a safe place. I mean hey, I’m still a puppy at heart.!

I am ready to find my forever family. I need lots of exercise, love, encouragement, and…did I say exercise?
I am very smart, great with children especially older ones who match my size, and at the end of the day I want to please everyone, wherever I go. I hope you can meet me and take me home soon! Please contact your family rep to get our game of fetch started.v
