My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

Gus is an adorable (and we mean ADORABLE!) 6 month-old boy who was found in the woods with two other pups. Over the course of several days, a Good Samaritan was able to catch the pups and brought them into the shelter in Baldwin County, AL. Knowing our rescue has a love of these special “black goldens,” the shelter contacted us and SGRR was more than happy to welcome Gus to our rescue.

Gus has the most delightful expression and playful personality. He has a loving disposition and soaks up attention. Although he is slightly shy when he first meets a new person, Gus warms up quickly and enjoys getting petted. He will even give a hug right back to his human! Gus gets along nicely with other dogs and likes playing with them. Since he had been foraging on his own for food for some time, he should be fed separately from other pets but shows no resource guarding whatsoever toward humans.

Our volunteer in AL told us, “Gus is cute as it can be and very affectionate! He wants to lick all over you! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! He is on the small side and will remain smaller because he does not have big feet. He weighs 30 pounds and I'd be surprised if he gets over 40 pounds. He would be the perfect size for just about anyone! He’s just the sweetest boy you can imagine!”

Gus’ beautiful black coat is simply gorgeous and his soulful black eyes will make your heart skip a beat. Gus is heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. He will be ready to travel north to his forever home in late January.

If you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Donna to be considered to adopt Gus soon – a cutie pie like this will not last long at all!

Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted slower than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" SGRR often goes a step further than basic rescue, taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of the physical conditions in which they are found. We have recently been taking in more and more of these special black dogs, many times considered to be golden mixes, into our rescue. We see an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” getting requests about them the minute we publish their picture on our site! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family to look past their coloring and see their true “golden heartedness,” to love them and make them their own! You’ll be glad that you did.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
