My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Secret is a beautiful, mellow, inquisitive, 3 y.o. purebred white female lab with a face and eyes that will melt anyone’s heart. But she is not just a pretty face. At about 65lbs, it turns out she is a really good lacrosse player and sometimes beats my Cody on a wildcap 40 yard dash to retrieve the lacrosse ball, which is no small feat. She loves walking, hiking, and swimming as well.

She and her life-long companion, Whisper, were outside dogs, and though very well cared for, they both spent long hours during the day and every night alone with little human interaction. Fortunately, their owners recognized that this arrangement was not optimal for the development of their dogs, and they turned them over to us to find the perfect forever home. While the first thought was to keep them together, it turns out that neither shows any sign of anxiety at being separated from each other. We believe each dog will develop more fully if they remain separated, and we emphasize their socialization with humans and all the things people and families do together.

Secret is such a sweet dog and loves to spend her time with me and my wife. She is never more than a few feet away and loves to give kisses and cuddle. She is really gentle in everything she does eating, kissing, playing with toys, and interacting with other people and animals. She discovered her first cat, and they got along famously. When she beats Cody to the lacrosse ball, she gives it back to him about 2/3 of the way back. She doesn’t have much experience yet with children but is happy to have them pet her and is ready to give them her patented gentle kiss.

Secret is a delight to observe as she discovers so many new things, such as the inside of the house, the kitchen, bedrooms and living room, the cat, the TV (she barked at the TV the first time she saw it), younger children, stores, soccer games – everything seems to be a new experience. She is very intelligent and inquisitive, and she adapts well to each new experience. A typical reaction when she sees something or someone new is to give a low “Ruff” with tail wagging as though to say, “what’s that?” Then she adapts, and if it moves, she wants to kiss it.

While not housetrained when she arrived, she has not had a single accident. She readily enters her crate at bedtime and never makes a peep at night. I now give her free range of the house, but she always stays close if she is not playing with Cody. Did I say she was sweet and mellow?

She loves to ride in cars. She even enjoyed the ride to the vet to get her microchip installed. On her walks, she pulls slightly at first then settles down to walk by your side. She will tug when she sees another dog coming, but not too hard and corrects easily. She has been trained previously by a professional trainer, but it is obvious that her training since then has been sporadic at best, so I recommend that her new owner enroll her in training as soon as possible.

It is important that her new owner(s) are home most of the time and that she is fully integrated into her new family. She has had three years outside with limited human interaction, and full integration with her new family is essential. She would make a great Therapy Dog with the proper training.

I would adopt her in a heartbeat if I could.
