My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bagheera. 4-7 yo neutered male declawed Burmese

Sweet Bagheera is a real Prince. He is a magnificent cat with his rich dark coat and even darker "points." He is also large, about 12 lbs, even though he is a very lean cat. If he fattened up a bit, he would probably weigh in around 15 lbs, although this breed is meant to stay fairly lean. He was quite traumatized by his situation, was hiding at the shelter, and remained very scared when he got to his foster home. If I had to guess what his background is, I would say he was probably the beloved pet of an older person that died or was taken into assisted living. It is common for the pets to either be turned out on the street or to be dumped in a shelter as a "stray." They list the cat as a stray because then they don't have to pay the surrender fees. Because this shelter has a policy of turning all "strays" back out onto the streets, they tipped his ear and were going to put this frightened, declawed cat into the general area from which his "finders" alleged he came. Fortunately, a quick-thinking shelter volunteer snagged him and showed him to me while I was at the shelter picking up another cat. There is no way Bagheera would have survived on the streets; I took him on the spot.

Like the mythical black panther in Kipling's Jungle Book, our Bagheera glides around the house like a creature of mystery. His long lanky body hugs the walls, and he pops up here and there when you least expect him. He is really a magnificent creature. A name from Aladdin might have been more a propo because he can be summoned like a geni from a bottle. The way to summon Bagheera is to open the refridgerator and then put something in the microwave. About the time the bell goes off on the microwave, he will appear as if out of thin air. He will expect that you will have a nice piece of chicken, cheese, or meat for him. Obviously, this is a cat that has had slaves in his life.

I recently placed Bagheera in a private room, one of the guest bedrooms. He is now gaining confidence, probably because he doesn't have to deal with the other cats, the screeching cockatoo, or the large dogs. When I come in to visit him, he talks to me and tells me stories about his day. Mostly, he tells me he's bored and needs a lap, a piece of chicken, and a game of laser pointer.

Bagheera has given us some clues that he has been well cared for and cherished in his past. Although he is a relatively young cat, it is evident that he's had regular dental care. We also see it in his behavior as it is obvious that he has been given treats off of someone's plate. We first noticed it when we would be eating dinner. Even though he was in hiding, when he smelled dinner he would come and lurk around a bit. He gets very vocal when he's expecting a treat.
I believe that once he has settled into his new environment, he will resume what appears to be a history of love and connection with his humans. He can be a bit of a bully with other cats so we are suggesting that he be an only cat. He seems to have gotten used to the dogs, so he might do well with a very well-behaved dog that knows to leave cats alone.

Bagheera has gotten a little extra TLC while in foster care. The shelter listed him as a 4 year old, but we think he's a bit older than that, possibly as old as 6-7. He's had a full blood panel, fecal exam, and urinalysis. All of his tests came back normal. He has clearly had recent dental care; his gums are healthy with no buildup on the teeth.

Bagheera is safely fostered in the guest bedroom in Vacaville.
