My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ruger is a 3 year old 70 lb male black lab mix. We don't know much about his history, other than he was originally in a high kill shelter in Indiana where he was then transferred to the "big house". Yes Ruger went to prison, literally. One of the prisons has a great program where the inmates work with the dogs, train them a bit and get them ready for adoption. Ruger was pardoned, ha ha, and is now living with us in Illinois. He now knows how to sit and shake and is ready to find his forever home. We began fostering Ruger on April 30th. What we can tell you after a couple of days is that Ruger is a great looking lab who is a very loyal, lovable dog and has a big heart. He just loves being around people.
His first day or two was about as good as could be expected. Ruger is learning the routine where first thing in the morning we get up, go outside and go to the bathroom, then come inside and eat breakfast. We are teaching him some manners and have him sit before we feed him, although he already knew that. We have a German Shepherd mix of our own, and Ruger as had no issues being around him so far. He is playful with other dogs so whether Ruger will be your only dog or will be an additional pet I'm sure he will do great in either situation. Ruger enjoys playing with ropes, toys, nylabones, etc..., which you can see in one of the pictures. He also likes to play fetch with his ball or a stick in the yard, see his action shot, but hasn't mastered bringing it back to you get. Ruger has shown no aggression with toys or food either. We've taken Ruger on a couple of walks so far and he's done great. We've passed a couple of other dogs along the way and Ruger has had positive interactions, even when a female dog nipped at him. He appears pretty mild mannered so far.
Ruger is crate trained and currently goes in there when we go to work. From the very first night he slept in our bedroom on the floor, which is really early. Typically we like to give the dogs a couple of days and see how they do but we had a good feeling about Ruger. He has not disappointed. Ruger appears to be potty trained and hasn't had an accident in the house yet, but with all new dogs we keep an eye on him and make sure he is let outside and gets into a routine. Basically all Ruger wants is to be loved, played with, and given some attention. Ruger really enjoys being near you and wouldn't mind being up on the couch and snuggling up with you if you are watching TV.
I would say Ruger has a medium level of energy and would do great in just about any type of home. If you want him to play he has the energy but the nice part is he can relax nicely and be very calm. I certainly see him being able to go for a walk or jog around the block with you. Ruger absolutely enjoys the outdoors and roaming around our fenced in backyard. This handsome guy deserves a forever home and would make a great addition to your family. Ruger is up to date on all his vaccinations and has been neutered.
