My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

An Alabama DWI suspect allegedly offered authorities an unusual explanation for his vehicle's erratic movements, "My dog was driving!"

Pupper founder her way to our rescue when her previous owner was arrested for drunk driving with Pupper and another dog in the car with him. While the other dog escaped from the car, Pupper faithfully remained with her former owner. She was taken in by animal control and the estranged couple was even given extra time to reclaim this 5-year-old baby-doll. But they never came and it became Pupper's lucky day because she is now on her way to a new and better life!

While Pupper was presumably loved, she was not very well care for and she came to us with a terrible flea allergy that has caused the loss of some fur on her derriere. She is now flea-free and is being treated for this dermatitis. Her fur is starting to grow back in already and her wavy black coat will soon be glorious once again! Pupper has a bubbling personality and loves everyone she meets - and everyone loves her right back! Her tail constantly wags and she has that "never met a stranger" outlook on life. Pupper is good with other dogs and lived most of her life with a canine companion. She would be fine with children, but has no history with cats.

This buxom beauty weighs about 55 pounds, and it would be best if she lost a little weight, but don't tell her we said that! Some exercise and diet control should help her shed 5 pounds in no time! On leash, Pupper is about a B- and will certainly improve with some practice and guidance. It seems as if leash walking is new to her, but she caught on pretty quickly when our volunteer, Lisa, directed her. Pretty Pupper is a dream when riding in the car. In fact, it is one of her favorite things to do! And, she is now an advocate of the designated driver campaign because she believes someone waits for you at home, and it may just very well be your dog! Be sure to view Pupper's doggy friend's video.

Pupper is heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. The vet can feel her spay scar so that had been taken care of earlier in her life. We believe Pupper is a Flat Coated Retriever mix. She will be ready to travel north to her forever family in late May.

Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
