My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

A Farewell and an Adoption

We were heartbroken when Bonded Brother Bragi became ill just two days after his intake to Sunshine, and we lost him to a splenetic tumor. He touched so many hearts in those two days, including Dr. Barb and her hospital staff. We are so saddened by his loss. Run free and happy, sweet boy.

Jaegeer/Buckles stayed at the vet clinic in Scituate, MA, where he was spoiled and kept busy greeting people and dogs, to ease the loss of his life-long buddy. Then a wonderful couple, recently approved to adopt, came into his life, falling in love with him the minute they met him. From Dr. Barb: Buckles is off to New Hampshire. Ed and Linda are awesome. Buckles jumped right in the car with his favorite toy in his mouth to start his new adventure.

After going through a very difficult time, we believe each of these wonderful Goldens is where he now belongs — Bragi in heaven with his human Mom, and Buckles with his new family where he will always have someone with him, walks on the beach, hikes in the mountains, and lots of love. Many thanks to all who helped this sweet bonded pair.

Their Story: Bragi and Jaeger have lived with their family since they were little pups. They have been loved and always received good care. Now 9 years old, this fabulous pair with classic Golden personalities is in need of a home for their retirement years because their world has fallen apart. Their beloved Mom passed away and their Dad’s job takes him out of state frequently, leaving these sweet boys alone too much. We have promised to keep them together, as they are very bonded to each other.

Bragi is most often called by his nickname, “Blobby." He is the cream-colored boy. Outgoing, calm and affectionate, Bragi loves people of all ages. He is a little slower than his brother, with some arthritis. He would benefit from regular walks and a diet to help him lose some extra pounds. He loves walks and wanted to keep going when our volunteer visited.

Jaeger is better known as “Buckles.” Confident and handsome, Buckles forgets he is 9 years old! He happily carries around a toy and loves balls, too. He is also wonderful with people, including little ones age 1 and 4.

Both Blobby and Buckles are well behaved, knowing basic commands and just wanting to be with you. They are everything you could hope to have in a Golden Retriever—so happy and loving. They love the car, walk well on leash, and have great house manners. They also both LOVE to swim and spent many summer days in the family’s pool. Their only fear is thunderstorms, for which they take medication. They have spent time at day care and in kennels getting along fine with other dogs. Their one bad habit is being protective of their yard, which has invisible fencing. If outside in the yard, they bark aggressively if other dogs are coming too close to their territory. We suspect this behavior will be controlled if they have their person with them, or they may do better with physical fencing or leash walks.

Blobby and Buckles are neutered, heartworm negative and up-to-date on their vaccinations. They are in MA and would love to meet a family who will give these boys the love and care they have always known. One of our SGRR volunteers spent some time with the boys recently and shared, "I visited with the boys this morning. I love them! Buckles greeted me with a toy in his mouth and constant wagging. Blobby is a love bug too and he smiled at me. Yes, Blobby smiles. I've been using their nicknames and they respond. If I didn't have 7 dogs, they would be at my house! They are happy and well adjusted Goldens."

We know that their Dad will be so relieved for them to have people to give them the attention and affection they deserve, and we promised to get it right for these sweet dogs. About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
