Pierre: 2 years old male, Seal Point Himalayan
There are so many unsung heroes and heroines who help kitties. One such woman fed and watched out for the welfare of the feral and homeless kitties near where she lived. One day, her six year old daughter, who was helping her, brought her mom over to see a cat “who was friendly”. Realizing that this nice Himalayan boy, whom we later named Pierre, was in trouble, she put the word out that she needed help with him. Who could take him and find him a home? “We can!” we said and we started working on transport to get him several hours away to Santa Cruz. One of our new volunteers, John, drove that night a couple hours away to get him. John kept him overnight and a friend of mine brought him the last hour to me in Santa Cruz.
So who did we have? We looked him over and found he was unneutered boy who had a bunch of foxtails and burrs in his fur. His nails were a good length except for one, a dewclaw, which had grown in a complete circle and bi-passing itself, went half way around the circle again! I had never seen anything like that and flinched when I cut it with the nail scissors. I don’t think I closed my eyes, but I felt like I wanted to. Where it rubbed on his paw, there was a wound. He was very happy to be given some wet food.
His matted coat was dirty and dull, perhaps from poor nutrition. He was thin and stressed.We wondered why his feet and certain other areas felt greasy and later his rescuer told me that the grease was from chicken soup in the dumpster he was scavenging in. Yikes!
He went to the vet the next day, and she found him to be a healthy, albeit skinny, boy, with good white teeth, good heart, lungs, etc. She asked if I could leave him then and there and she would neuter him and groom his fur while he was under anesthesia. (She is always intent on getting foxtails out of cats.) He went on antibiotics for his paw wound.
So here he is, inside with us and well loved. He is gaining weight and is a nice happy boy, though he does NOT like the camera and scowls. What on earth could be his story? Such a beautiful little boy sliding through garbage in a dumpster. His rescuer believed his family had moved away and he was left behind. She knocked on door and put up flyers but no one knew anything. Pierre is litterbox perfect so there was no issue there.. He is goodnatured and loves humans. Did he get lost? Was he left or put out “because someone would take him in” as people like to think. We will never know. He is now microchipped.
Meanwhile, this good natured young kitty is looking for a loving home. He needs lots of cuddles in a safe, stable home. I think he is cat friendly. I don’t know about dogs. He would probably be fine with gentle children over three to four feet high.
Pierre eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.
