Blue is a handsome blue eyed boy - around 2 years old approximately. He is a husky-pit bull- heeler (?) mix. Blue is house trained and is a very nice boy with a lot of energy. Blue does have a high prey drive, and does not do well with cats and small animals. He loves to go for walks and jogs, and stays nicely by your side while you jog.

Unlike our cats, we try to have our dogs in foster homes throughout the week. If a dog is in a foster home, they come in on Saturdays from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Arrangements can be made to have specific dogs brought in during the week- just give us a call or email to see if the dog you are interested in is in a foster home and set up a meeting time if necessary.

Our adoption fees include the following: all of our dogs/puppies are current on vaccinations (DHPP and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, heartworm tested and current on preventative, treated for fleas/ticks and are spayed or neutered. Our large dog adoption fee is generally $125.00 + tax. Our small dog and puppy adoption fee is generally $160.00 + tax. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances. Due to space limitations, we do not hold dogs.

You also have the option to microchip your new dog/puppy for only $20 + tax. Brookings city pet licenses are also available for purchase for those living in Brookings, SD.

Because we are on a busy street, we require that all dogs leaving the shelter be in a carrier or on leash. All pets remain up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee paid.

About Brookings Regional Humane Society

About Our Shelter...

BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. Prior to BRHS forming, there was no humane society/adoption group; the majority of the animals at Animal Control had to be euthanized. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS’ priority. Those unclaimed within a five-day holding period are surrendered to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care. It is rare now for an animal to be euthanized, as this organization continues to accomplish its mission.

In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.

BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We're open Monday through Friday 12-6, Saturdays 11-4, closed Sundays. We are a small foster home based group but we do have a shelter building to house our cats, small animals, and our new arrivals. We do have our dogs on site if they do not have a foster home- dogs in foster come in on Saturdays 11-4 or by appointment.

Our Adoption Process...

We have a brief adoption application. Our adoption fees vary based on type of animal.
Once your application is approved, our animals are usually able to go home the same day!
Our dogs are generally $125-$160+tax (everyone is spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, etc!)
Our cats/kittens are generally $50-$105 + tax (up to date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and microchipped).
