Peanut's Story...
Star and Peanut came in together and are two of the cutest and sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. Whatever you do please try not to laugh or giggle when meeting them. Yes...they are a little odd with their wire hair coats that stand up end to end and their short little legs trying to hold up their 40 pound bodies, but they have no idea they are funny looking. They are very playful and within minutes will to try to outdo each other to be your best friend. They do not have to be adopted together but you might consider this when you see them playing together and the special bond they do have. Both are black and tan and were born Dec. 2015. Because they are still young they do have some learning to do with regard to leash walking, house training, sits and stays, etc. but they are eager to learn. Come and see for yourself why we think these two cuties are so special.

To see Peanut and Star by APPOINTMENT ONLY, submit an online dog adoption application at An adoption counselor will contact you--typically within three business days--to discuss with you the type of dog you are looking for and to see whether we have a good match for you. Our counselor will discuss the next steps afterward.

Our dogs and horses are NOT at the HSFC shelter at 4057 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA--only our cats, birds, rabbits, and small mammals can be visited there. Come by and see us!

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Peanut, a Fairfax Basset Hound/Wirehaired Fox Terrier dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Basset Hound/Wirehaired Fox Terrier for sale in Fairfax, or seeking a Basset Hound/Wirehaired Fox Terrier dog from a breeder in Fairfax.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Fairfax already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Fairfax breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Basset Hound/Wirehaired Fox Terrier breeders who help with Basset Hound/Wirehaired Fox Terrier rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Fairfax paves the way for another one to be saved.
