My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Jagger! This precious Black & Tan Coonhound is so stinking sweet! At just under 60 lbs, he probably won’t grow too much more since he is almost a year old now. For being a hound, he is surprisingly quiet! The only time he lets out his howl is when he is playing around with other dogs and gets super excited. As far as day to day goes, you may never hear a peep out of him.
When Jagger was first brought to the shelter, he had an embedded collar. Before you look that up, be warned that the images can be pretty terrifying. We are happy to say that Jagger is fully healed and you would never even know that he went through that rough patch! There is a scar, but he also has a pretty saggy neck, and the fur is growing back beautifully. You can see how much it’s healed on one of his pictures, where he is lying on his back. He can now wear a collar and walk on a leash with no issues! Of course, he’s a bit of a spaz, so there is some training to be done still 🙂
This lanky lad absolutely loves playing with other dogs. He doesn’t need soft introductions and is great at the dog park. If you want to hear a nice big howl, that’s where it’ll come out! His nose works extremely well and he’ll put that thing to the ground and sniff out the entire new territory. He can be a little rough when playing once he gets going, but it takes a minute for him to feel comfortable around new dogs as he is somewhat of a scardy cat. If other dogs are vocal when playing with him, it takes a minute before he realizes that’s just the way they are, but he thoroughly loves to chase, wrestle, and romp around the dog park like nobody’s business. We've learned that Jagger does not do well with cats. He wants to chase them and play with them and then the hound comes out full throttle. So unless you're really willing to put in the time and effort to a very slow introduction, Jagger would do best in a cat-free home.
Food is a fabulous motivator for this big guy. If it’s edible, he’ll eat it. Because Foster Mom feeds him in his crate, he absolutely loves that spot and runs right in when it’s dinner time! All you have to do is grab his food bowl and he’ll take off, sit, and wait in his crate. Right now, Jagger lives with Miles & Gemma. They all get along very well and wrestle in the yard when the weather permits. Tug of war is something Jagger is learning to enjoy, though he prefers his toys for himself. He likes to take whatever the other dogs are interested in, then chew it up on his own. Rawhides and meaty bones need to be given to Jagger in a space that he is by himself and he doesn’t have to guard it. The good thing is that he is easily distracted so if you need to get something back from him, enticing him with a new toy or treat will take his attention off the old one.
With how tall Jagger is, it’s easy for him to find things that other dogs may not have the opportunity to see. He has a scavenging habit of finding chap sticks, ear plugs, tissues… he just thinks everything is a toy! On the plus side, he responds to correction quite well and his behavior has been improving. Now that Jagger’s water intake is being limited before bed and before his foster parents leave the house, he’s finally housebroken! Sometimes he will nervous/excite pee, so when Foster Mom comes home, she lets him out of the crate and ignores him until he is outside. And when meeting new people, it must be done outside for easy cleaning sake. But outside of that, he keeps his crate clean all day and doesn’t have accidents at night anymore!
For a hound, Jagger is a pretty mellow man. Foster Mom works from home on Fridays and he typically curls up next to her feet as her protector. He has proven to bond with his humans very much so and wants to be able to serve a purpose. He is eager to please and even though he still has some manners to work on, he is getting smarter every day!
To ensure our dogs are placed in a safe environment, we require a home visit for all adoptions. Because of this, we typically only adopt to homes within 30 minutes of Athens, GA. If you are further away than that and are interested in one of our pups, please still fill out an application and we can discuss your options. Please understand that you would be responsible for all transportation - meeting the dog, picking the dog up to start a trial, returning the dog should he/she not be a good fit, etc. Please visit our website for more info.
