My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

2/6/17 Foster Update: Ebenezer has been living with a wonderful foster family in CT. They tell us that he is as lovable as a dog can be. He sleeps quietly in his crate and you do not hear a peep out of him all night. In their house, he learned that the living room and dining room are off limits and he will wait in the hallway for them. Ebbie loves his toys and loves them even more if you play with him. If you are laying on the couch, he will push himself into you and slap you with his paws for attention and petting. The foster family is teaching Ebbie manners and he has become much less "mouthy." This is a behavior common in young Goldens, which should have been corrected when he was a puppy. Unfortunately, no one took the time to teach this sweet boy early on that this behavior is unacceptable. But no worries, Ebbie is a super smart boy and will learn the rules in no time!

Speaking of smart… check this out! Ebbie’s foster dad shares, “He is extremely smart! I was laying on the couch watching football under a blanket. We taught him to ring the bell if he has to go out. Apparently we did not hear him ringing the bell so he grabbed my blanket and pulled it off of me! After rescuing the blanket, he brought me one shoe, but we have to teach him that I wear the Merrills and my wife wears the Uggs!” Additionally, “If you reprimand him with "NO!" he will bow to you! We thought it was a coincidence the first time, but not the second....third....or fourth times!” Ebbie knows "sit" and "stay" by voice commands and hand gestures. He doesn't seem like he likes giving his paw though. He loves visitors and he will run up to them and plop on their feet. Kids do not seem to phase him, but we feel he would do best in a home with older children as his zest for life might cause a little tyke to be knocked over. He makes us laugh until we cry when he does something he shouldn't, like jumping into the bay window or having him run off with a shoe while you are putting on its mate. He's the class clown!

Ebenezer’s fosters are also working on fine-tuning some of his prey-reactive behaviors like sitting by a tree and barking at a squirrel who has infiltrated the property until it leaves his line of sight. This is a great dog with a ton of potential! We at SGRR begin the rehabilitation of a dog like Ebenezer - but it is up to the adopters to continue the rehabilitation and commit to the complete well-being of a dog. In return, you will get a friend who will love you unconditionally for the rest of his life!

Ebbie's Story: Ebenezer is a sweet young boy who came to us from a high kill shelter in Mississippi. He was seemingly surrendered by a former owner who did not have time for him. Ebbie came to us with little training, much like a puppy in a full grown dog's body! Because of the popularity of the Golden Retriever, people sometimes do not realize that even Golden Retrievers do not raise themselves. They need lots of exercise and socialization with other dogs and with humans. However, most of all, they need a commitment of time to help them find a secure place in the pack, along with "exercise, discipline, and affection," as Cesar Milan would say. Today’s busy lifestyle sometimes leaves little room for that training and exercise, both of which are critical requirements for any well behaved canine companion.

Estimated to be about 2 years old, Ebbie is a very handsome and typical young Golden boy. He is full of excitement and has an wonderful sense of humor, but still an over-grown pup, requires time, attention, training, patience, and the ability for his owner to laugh at whatever comes their way. When our photographer visited with Ebenezer, to take his pictures, she shared, "By far he is the most energetic dog I have ever been around. The one moment he sat down was when I rubbed his ears... he loved that! He is very sweet and loving, but VERY active." With this in mind, we will say upfront - couch potatoes need not inquire. This is a dog for a very active adopter who will work with Ebbie on his manners, leash skills, and mold him into the dog he is meant to be.

Ebenezer completed his heartworm treatment and recently arrived in the northeast to an adoptive home. He and the resident dog have not been hitting it off so we are seeking an active home for Ebbie where he will be an only pet. He has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, and micro-chipped. Not much is known of his past, but that is okay because it is now behind him. It is his future that we turn our focus to as we seek to find Ebbie his forever home!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
