My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello new friends,
My name is Dodger and I’m an affectionate, sweet and cuddly bichon boy of three who always makes my foster Mom smile. She says I love to be loved (that’s a fact) and am an active and curious guy who LOVES long walks where I can stop and smell the flowers, bushes and the trees.

If I am not out and about, I’m content to be at home near Mom. I taught her a few games to pass the time. Here is how my favorite one goes: I bring Mom a toy, then I try to tug it away from her. The harder she pulls, the harder I pull. Mom is a good sport and will always try again – and sometimes I even let her win. Another thing I taught Mom is how to give my special belly rub. This kind is done standing up. I know that sounds silly, but I like it better that way and, as I said, Mom is always a good sport.

Another thing I like to do is watch TV. Well, to tell you the truth, I don’t actually watch it, but I am happy to be close to Mom on the couch. So that’s why Mom calls me a lap dog (because I like to sit on her lap.) Her favorite part though is where I lay my head on her shoulder and stay there for a long cuddle.

When Mom has company, I am happy to greet everyone. I stand on my hind legs and do the bichon wave as a welcome. That always makes her laugh.

I have a wonderful life now but it hasn’t always been that way. Before I became a furkid, I was living with a family that kept me in the backyard. I rarely was cuddled or held. One day someone left the gate open – and I went out to explore the world. I didn’t know a lot about this thing called ‘traffic’ and I was in an accident. One of my eyes was hurt badly and I was taken to a place called a shelter. I was very sad, in a lot of pain and really worried.

My foster mom-to-be reached out to my BFK Aunties. She wanted to help and saw something special in me! Even though I couldn’t see, I could hear the love in her voice and knew I was going to be safe. The wonderful vets at Stonecreek Animal Hospital tried but couldn’t fix my one eye and my other eye had something called a cat-a-rack. (Nothing is good when it concerns a cat.) There was nothing that could be done for my other eye. So that brings me to today.

In my loving foster home I’m learning to adjust to not using my eyes. My Mom has taught me lots of helpful commands like step up and step down. Sometimes I still get a little frightened but I’m learning that people are kind and I am doing what mom calls “developing trust.: Since eyesight is the least important sense to us dogs, it will only be a matter of time till I am comfortable everywhere because I am very outgoing at home. My nose and my ears work perfectly, and that’s all I need.

My life was finally going in the right direction – then my Mom told me she has to move and can’t take me with her. We are both very, very sad – but she knows that there is someone out there who will understand and give me a second chance at a loving home!
If you have another active fun furkid who can teach me the ropes, and if you have a special place in your heart for a special guy who so wants to please, I would be beyond grateful. I want so much to love and be loved and to be with a very special someone who will help me become the best little bichon that you could ever ask for.

Sending lots of doggy kisses and bichon waves,
Deserving, Darling and Devoted Dodger
