My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Every so often, you meet a dog whose story embodies the reason animal rescuers, do what they do. This is Sampson. Sampson is about a 1 1/2 year old 55lb male Pitbull. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Sampson’s mega-watt pretty “Pitty” smile and sparkling eyes won’t reveal what he has endured. After he escaped his yard, Sampson was found by animal control and taken to a shelter. He had been alone in the city for several days at least. With his snout bound shut with black electrical tape, he was unable to eat or drink, he was dehydrated and terrified. What’s worse, the trauma Sampson suffered was at the hands of the people who were supposed to care for, love and protect him—his owners. Sampson also has deep scars running down his back, his owners said those wounds occurred when he was trying to escape under the fence and got stuck. But, Sampson’s heart is still full of love and his spirit is resilient. Having loving, patient, supportive, trust-building foster parents has helped Sampson’s recovery. And, finding a forever home, equal to Sampson’s fosters, who will continue his emotional healing, is what we are looking for.
Sampson is described as affectionate, joyful, playful and well-behaved, however, he is timid in new environments. Sampson is working on walking on leash. He recently enjoyed visiting a local city park where he was among crowds of people, new sights and sounds. Sampson’s fosters also walk him on leash within his fenced back yard to practice socialization with their two dogs, who are off-leash. This is all good work for Sampson, but for exercise he prefers running and playing fetch with tennis balls or sticks in his fenced in yard with his people. Sampson knows, Sit and Stay. When Sampson is in the house, he is given free roam for short period of time with lots of playing with toys, which he loves to shred, and lots of petting, which he repays with cuddles and kisses. He loves blankets and warmth—he will snuggle right next to the heater. Sampson was raised with a sister whom he played with and never showed any aggression toward. However, he lacked proper dog-socialization outside the home and doesn’t seem to understand all of the language and social cues that dogs give one another. He can be selective with dog friends and would likely do best with a female his size or as an only dog. He is calm composed and quiet—rarely barking. But will give an alert/protective growl when someone new comes to the house. He was sweet to everyone at the vets, even when they took his temperature. He’s good in the car, but tries to get in your lap when you’re driving. Sampson shows he is comfortable with you by rolling onto your lap and asking for belly rubs. Sampson is a special boy. He is a resilient survivor. Sampson is a house dog, a lap dog, a people dog. Now, he just needs a family to call his own. Somewhere reading this story is someone, the person who will change the narrative of Sampson’s short life, and write a happy ending.
