Mary-Tyler is a special needs cat, who will need a special home to meet her needs. When she first came into foster, her foster mom was concerned that she was extremely thin and didn't seem well. A thorough check up at the vet revealed that she was diabetic and had clearly been suffering for some time. Mary-Tyler was immediately started on a regime of insulin and a low carb wet food diet. Her foster mom did an amazing job of testing her blood every 2-4 hours and giving her the necessary insulin shots she required. Mary-Tyler was a great patient! She would climb up on foster mom's lap and sit while she had her blood tested, knowing a special treat of dehydrated chicken (the only treats she can have) was the reward! After less than three weeks of twice daily insulin shots, Mary-Tyler's diabetes went into remission! Mary-Tyler will need ongoing, periodic blood testing to ensure her blood glucose stays low and she will need a special diet of wet, low carb food, which she gets 3-4 times a day (breakfast, dinner and bedtime snack), for the rest of her life. Her food is not a special veterinary or expensive food - she can eat food that is readily available at your local store (Fancy Feast or Nutro, for example)! Her condition can hopefully be controlled by a proper diet and she may never need insulin again. She could stay in remission for the rest of her life!
Mary-Tyler was found in January 2017 as a stray. After spending a week in a shelter, she was rescued and went to live with her foster mom. It was discovered that Mary-Tyler had a microchip and her previous family was located. She had been adopted from animal control, along with another cat. Unfortunately, not long after, the family could no longer keep the cats and gave them away. Sadly, less than two weeks later, Mary-Tyler and her sister were dumped outside and picked up by animal control. Her sister has since found her forever home and now Mary-Tyler is patiently waiting for hers.
Mary-Tyler is looking for a very extraordinary forever family who will be able to give her all the love and attention that she deserves and also be able to provide the care that she will need to live a long and healthy life. She is very eager to form a lifetime bond with a family who will pamper her like a princess! She will continue to enjoy all the love and care she's been receiving at her current foster home until her forever home is found.
Mary-Tyler is current on vaccinations, spayed and microchipped.
