Drake is a BEAUTIFUL "black golden" boy who is estimated to be about 4 years-old. He was picked up as a stray in Mobile County, AL, and sadly no one came to claim this happy boy. But not to worry; it was Drake’s lucky day because he is now on his way to finding a forever home where he will be loved and cherished.
Drake is good with other dogs and he is described as "sweet and playful." He greets our volunteers at the kennel with a happy tail wag. He loves to be petted, and with his sleek and lustrous black coat, you will never want to stop petting him. His photos do not do him justice – trust us when we say this boy is stunning! Drake's smile lights up the room and his presence will light up your life! He would be a delightful walking or jogging buddy, happy to start the day with an early morning jaunt to take in all the wonderful scents that dogs like to sniff. Drake was cat tested at the vet's office where he is being kenneled - the cats hissed at him and he backed up. We do feel that if the cat ran, Drake would give chase so a cat-free home would be best for his handsome fella.
One of our volunteers in AL went to spend some time with Drake recently. She told us, "He is a big ole' puppy in the way he acts! He is VERY affectionate and soaks up attention. He is an incredibly pretty boy and his smile is amazing. He loves to be petted and is just a doll of a dog." Lisa went on to say, "Drake acts like a young, goofy Golden in black fur." He keeps his kennel clean and has a moderate energy level. Drake shows no signs of abuse in the past, and is trusting and loving. He got a B- on leash skills so that is one small area that could use some improvement. All-in-all, this is one AWESOME dog!
Drake weighs in at 62 lbs and has been neutered, brought up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. He is under treatment for heartworm at one of our vet's office in AL and will be ready to come north around 5/20/17.
Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
