My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kobe is a well-trained, handsome, sweet, people and dog-friendly, six-year-old, 60 pound, Dogo Argentino-mix with cropped ears and a long tail looking for a loving guardian.

He is housebroken, knows the commands sit, down, paw, bark, high-5 as well as spin and he takes food very gently from your fingers. He’d make a fine companion for someone willing to give him the daily enrichment, love and exercise all dogs need to succeed in life.

You’d never guess that this gorgeous and special boy was once a sadly neglected skinny stray found with a rope around his neck in Kendall County. He is currently a star of the Shedd Aquarium Aquatic Presentation.

Trainers at the Shedd use positive reinforcement training on dogs in the same manner as they use it with 1,600-pound Beluga whales. Hand cues and tasty rewards from a trainer can encourage a whale to position itself for a veterinary mouth exam, and also gives dogs an excellent outlet for their energy. The training has turned once difficult dogs into wonderfully civilized dream dogs.

It’s interesting to watch as the trainers almost never use a bowl to feed the animals in their care, instead they use puzzles, Kong toys or feed by hand as a reward for the animals’ efforts.

Kobe was adopted by the Shedd to participate in their program and now it’s time for him to find a lucky family to adopt him so the Shedd trainers can move on to their next project dog.

Kobe enjoys people - of all ages - as much as he enjoys the company of other dogs - of all sizes! While there are no cats to test with at the aquarium, he does do well with the otters.

Kobe is very healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and on monthly preventative.

To meet and possibly adopt Kobe, please contact Melia at melia88@comcast.net for an adoption application. His adoption fee of $200 benefits the rescued dogs of Lucky Dog Rescue. He is currently living, working and performing at Chicago’s Shedd.
