Katya: 18 month old female, Lavender Creme Peterbald
I had to give this lovely girl a Russian name. Katya means “pure” in Russian. Peterbald kitties were first bred in St Petersburg where a Russian hairless cat called a Donskoy was mated with an Oriental Shorthair Siamese, hence “Peter” and “bald.” This new breed was just accepted in the show rings in 2009 so this is a very new breed. These kitties can have various types of coats -- they can be bald, partly bald with bits of hair here and there, velour coated with an all over coat that feels like a short stubby beard, or possessed of various lengths of hair. Sound confusing? Yes. Add to that the fact that the length of the Peterbald’s hair can change even to the extent of disappearing over the years. Katya has a velour coat; she has all over short, slightly stiff hair. I guess she may become bald at sometime in the future.
What Katya is is a lovely young girl. I find her tremendously appealing. She is shy with strangers but very quickly overcomes her initial shyness to show that she is a very affectionate and loving girl. She looks you right in your eyes and reaches deep in your heart. The Peterbald breed description speaks of their “dog like” character. These kitties love company and want to be a part of all that is going on in their homes. They have a few special requirements--they need to be bathed or wiped down at least once a month, tthey need to be kept warm, and, because they love the sun, of course, they may need sun screen, especially on their ears, to protect them from sunburn.
Katya came into foster with us from a situation with an ailing Oriental Shorthair breeder who could no longer care for her kitties. Katya was very shy -- very frightened -- when she arrived. She was pregnant with one kitten who did not survive. All things had not been going well in her world for a while, perhaps for her whole short life. Many of these Oriental kitties that we took in had ear mites. Of all of them, Katya had the worst infestation of mites and they drove her into a frenzy and caused her to tilt her head and walk in circles. Her mites are gone now but some of the head tilt remains. It will either disappear entirely say the vets or not -- time will tell.
Katya is a very tender, special girl. It is hard not to be protective of her. She is not an alpha cat and would like the company of another gentle, non-alpha kitty. She is cat friendly but can be bullied. I would not send her home to a family with young children or dogs. She needs a safe, loving home with parents who are around a lot and want to treasure her in the center of their lives as their companion and child. Her adoptive family will be so lucky to have this very unusual girl in their lives.
Katya eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.

NOTE: We prefer families with children bring them to the adoption appointment. Why? This allows interaction between the children and the cat. This helps ensure they will be a good fit for each other. A mismatch between a child and a cat is not in anyone’s best interest!
