My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Taz's story will make you very upset. Unfortunately we are not at liberty at this point (or so we have been told) to describe how he wound up in his current situation. Labrador Friends was contacted and let's just say that he is being well taken care of.

He is such a sweet, loving boy, age 7, in spite of all that's happened to him recently. We are looking for a foster/forever home where he can get better and start on the road to recovery. His prognosis is good. Any donations for his care would be greatly appreciated. (Labrador Friends of the South, PO Box 933, Cumming, GA 30028)

Update: 8/29/06 Taz is already starting to move around quite well on 3 legs. This boy is simply amazing!

UPDATE from foster mom (9/1/06)

It is amazing to all of us how a dog who just had a leg amputated about a week ago is adjusting so well and so quickly! We put the ramp up for Taz to use in getting down from the car, but before we could stop him he jumped out on to the pavement -- hit his chin and got up like nothing had happened, then started running down our driveway. Fortunately, he can't run very fast (yet!), so I caught up to him easily and he just lay down and wouldn't move. I think he was very confused and just didn't understand what was happening. At any rate, I stayed with him while John brought his leash. I snapped the leash to his collar, and PRESTO! he got up immediately, without even needing a tug, and walked just as pretty as you please back up the driveway into the house. Clearly, he must be leash-trained.

He took himself on a tour of our house, followed me around this afternoon, which meant Buddy followed, too -- so we had a parade going for awhile. Within an hour or two he seemed quite at home. Had found a couple of those hard hollow bones that our dog Samantha used to have and sat down and had a great time just chewing away. Of course, then Buddy decided that that bone was his favorite toy (although he'd never given it a second glance before), and as soon as Taz set it down for a moment, Buddy came over and took it away. I got a second bone for Taz, so Buddy dropped the bone he just took, and came over and took that one! There is a little low-key turf battle going on, but I predict it will resolve itself within the next day. As for our cats, Taz barked at them both. Calvin, our laidback cat, gave him the cat-equivalent of "oh, pleassse" and strolled off like he couldn't be more unimpressed. Jenny, our incredibly ill-tempered cat (or the "spawn of Satan", as John likes to call her), hissed and acted tough (all 6 lbs. of her!), so I think they decided to give each other a wide berth.

In other words, it's been a typical day in the introduction of a new animal into a household. Taz ate his dinner with gusto, and as we speak, is sleeping in our son's room next to his bed. One other thing I've discovered about Taz -- he does beg for food. When I ate lunch this afternoon, he came around to my right side, rested his head on my leg, and drooled all over it until I gave him a Wheat Thin. He is the king of drool.

UPDATE from foster mom (9/4/06)

Taz is a dog with a lot of heart. Having endured the loss of his left front leg, he seems determined not to let it slow him down or dampen his spirit. He is housebroken (he whines to let you know when he wants to go out) and has some experience walking on a leash. He gets along well with other dogs and tolerates cats. He is a sweet boy who loves tummy rubs and just wants to be around people who will love him back. He seems to like the outdoors, but needs to be on a leash when he is, unless he's in a fenced yard. He likes walks and each day seems to test his limits, wanting to go farther and farther before turning back. He has amazed me at how quickly he has adapted to the loss of his leg, has great balance, and doesn't hesitate to go up and down steps. He deserves the best forever home a dog can have and will repay his new people with years of love.

UPDATE from foster mom (9/8/06)

- Taz is going full speed, and even with three legs, he can give you a run for your money. He is also a complete chow hound -- ready to eat any time, and we discovered he can get something off of a kitchen counter. He must have really strong back legs and a lot of determination.
