My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please meet Petra. Her story is one of suffering from criminal neglect. She comes to Beagle Maryland from rural Virginia where her owner kept her chained and neglected for most of her life. Not only did she become obese because of lack of exercise, but her immune system broke down because of the extremely bad conditions in which she was kept and, in the end, she developed demodectic mange and lost all her hair. A concerned neighbor contacted animal control and Petra was seized from the owner and taken to the local shelter. Her condition was so bad that it was thought she would not survive.
However, Petra hung in and was provided with medical care. She spent two months at the shelter and was released to Beagle Maryland after we agree to give this girl a new lease on life. Petra has now been with us for two weeks and there’s still quite a way to go before she looks her “bestest.” With continued treatment, good food, a clean environment, regular exercise and lots of TLC, she is on her way to full recovery.
She has already considerably slimmed down and has reached her ideal weight. The only sign of her earlier obesity is the surplus skin that gives her an endearing wrinkled look. Also, her hair is coming back in.
We would like to thank all those who did not give up on Petra. She should be a reminder to all of us that not only cats, but dogs also have many lives and that it is up to us to make those lives good.

A word from Petra: “I’m working very hard on forgetting me previous life. It was bad and I don’t really want to think much about it. I’m very happy right now. Not only do I have good food, a warm, soft and clean bed, but a foster family that gives me hugs, talks to me nicely and teaches me lots of new things. Like, for example, walking outdoors. I can sniff to my heart’s content and look at squirrels and explore. I was never able to do that before. I sure missed a lot! And I never hear a nasty or angry word. That makes me feel good. Also, and I really love this part, I have another beagle to play with. She and I go nuts sometimes. We run around chasing each other (we like the dining room best of all) or we play tug of war. We get the toys from a basket – we just stand above it and take them out and discuss which one we should try to rip apart. We love tug of war. Or we grab each others’ ankles or ears or necks. That little beagle guy, Angelo, sometimes butts in, but we let him know who’s boss. So yes, my life is so good now I don’t see why I should even bother thinking about the way it was before.”

Petra’s foster mom: This sweet dog deserves a loving home. She’s very eager to please and her desire to learn is palpable. She’s a great observer and in the two short weeks she’s been with us, she has already learned all there is to learn about living in a home. What more, Petra is very affectionate and a great “story teller.” She cuddles up to “talk” and spill out her heart. She has touched all those who have met her – from the animal control officer, to the humane society volunteers, to the vets and technicians who treated her, and now to us. Petra is also making up for all her lost time – she loves to play and understands toys. In spite all that she has gone through, she’s very trusting, affectionate and outgoing. This is a wonderful “sunshine bright” beagle girl!
Adoptive Status: Spayed, UTD on shots and micro-chipped.
