Update on Abby

If you regularly check our website, you've probably seen our featured dog, Abby. We knew from the start it would take a special person or family to be willing to bring her into their heart and home at the age of 13. But we could not turn her away because she has been given a rotten deal at this point in her life, especially by her human Dad who just wants her out of the house. Since finding fosters at this time of year is difficult, Abby remains with the family relinquishing her. A few wonderful people have asked about her, but all of those families have young dogs in the house, and Abby would prefer to live quietly, perhaps with another older dog. (Cats are OK too.)

Our goal is to turn Abby's bad luck into the best thing that could happen to her! If any of you in our awesome Sunshine family think you might be able to provide Abby with comfort and love, please seriously consider her. She is a healthy girl and an easy keeper - she is a gentle homebody. We know someone will be able to look past her age and just enjoy her every day for the sweet Golden that she is!

If Abby stays in your thoughts and you have wondered if she might fit into your life, please contact Candy (candyvs2@aol.com).
********************************

We have good news about our sweetheart Abby -- she has gone on a couple of car rides recently and when she is in the back seat with the window open a little so she can sniff the air, she does fine. What she really did not enjoy about the car was being in the far back all by herself. We can also tell you that Abby can do stairs without a problem. She needs a little boost into a car, but never hesitates when given a chance to jump up if one of the kids in her home has some food to share. And speaking of kids, Abby is gentle and laid back with the young children she shares her current home with. She is a great dog, which makes it even more difficult to understand how her family can give her up.

From the time she was adopted as an 8-week old pup, Golden Retriever Abby has belonged to one couple. She was loved, trained with a gentle hand, and treated with kindness--a big part of a family. Slept on her parents' bed, had the run of the house while they worked. Life was good. Now she is 13 and her family has no time for her because there are two young children at home, so Abby must go.

Abby is affectionate and a real cuddler. She loves to be petted and leans gently against you. She is friendly and outgoing and knows her basic commands. She loves her walks and gets very excited when she knows she’s going out but will settle down nicely after a few minutes. Like many of us, Abby has her quirks and she has an intense dislike of car rides because the only time she was taken in the car was to go to the vet's or the kennel. She needs to go outside for potty breaks a few times during the day, and she's a little hard of hearing--but otherwise appears quite healthy.

Abby is a gentle old soul who would be so happy to receive the attention and affection she once knew. If you have time in your life and room in your heart for this dear old Golden, please apply and ask us about Abby. We could not turn her away as her family now has and we just know there is someone out there who will love her for the rest of her life! If there is something about Abby that touches your heart, PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: APPLY ON-LINE TO ADOPT. A donation will be accepted for Abby's adoption in lieu of an adoption fee.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
