My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Boomer has been at Monterey County Animal Services, 160 Hitchcock Road, Salinas, CA, since September 14. His ID is A108719. The shelter’s phone number is 831-769-8850. I have an excellent relationship with this shelter, which has suffered from severe cutbacks these past 2 fiscal years and whose adoptions are down while intake continues to rise.

I have spent time with Boomer on just 2 occasions, the first time for about 40 minutes at the shelter when this video was taken: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAZaAec02nE&NR=1 He is so quick to learn and grasped “look”, “sit”, and “down” in minutes. The second occasion was yesterday afternoon, when I took Boomer for an outing. He was just stupendous, especially taking into account his age (the shelter thinks he is 4 months old) and the many stimuli – people of all ages, dogs, cats, a somewhat urban setting – and was calmly focused on me. He did a bit of complaining when I crated him for the car ride but settled down with a Kong. He also attached himself to me and did a bit of anxious barking when I left him briefly. Really, he was awesome and a true little ambassador for deaf dogs!

The foster home recommended to me by the trainer at the local SPCA (where they conduct classes for deaf dogs, by the way) fell through yesterday. I haven’t yet found anyone else to foster him, so by default the responsibility will fall to me. I will take Boomer if necessary to save his life, though with 8 dogs and my 99-year old mother in my care, it will be less than ideal for everyone. Should I foster him or come up with a local foster home, however, I am pretty sure I can get Boomer into one of 2 rescues, either Animal Friends Rescue Project in Pacific Grove or Northern California Family Dog Rescue in San Francisco.

I anticipate the shelter will be pressuring me to move Boomer along in the next week – 2 at the outside. I would make myself available to a qualified rescue group or adopter to facilitate getting him to safety, e.g. coordinating transportation, setting up a neuter appointment, etc. By the way, the shelter is calling Boomer a pit bull/Dalmatian mix. I would say that Dalmatian is the more dominant of the 2 breeds, if indeed he has any pit in him at all. No matter, Boomer is a beautiful, intelligent, happy and sweet puppy deserving of all the very best in the world. Huge thanks to you for your support!

Best regards,
Linda Shen
