My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 3/4/12!

Carmen is a wonderful female Golden who is around 2 years old. She was dumped on a farm down south, with her litter of 6 pups. The farmer placed 4 pups and then requested help the last 2 puppies and Mamma Carmen.

Carmen is being fostered in a loving home in Pensacola, FL with two older resident dogs and she gets along well with them. Her foster mom reports that Carmen has not had an accident in the house. She does not like a crate nor does she need it. She has full run of the house when the foster mom & dad are home. When no one is home, Carmen hangs out in the family’s Florida room with canine pals Mae and Truman. Carmen met a puppy recently and although she was interested in playing with the pup, she was a bit overwhelmed by its over-the-top exuberance. Therefore, a calm canine companion would suit Carmen best.

Carmen does not like thunderstorms and will pace and pant during storms. She may be comforted by something like a “Thunder shirt” or just having her human near her. Foster mom, Cheryl has found Carmen is becoming a “Velcro dog” and prefers to be by Cheryl’s side. She does not like to go out and Cheryl has to push Carmen out the door and then hide so she will not see her so Carmen will go and do her “business!” After being dumped by her former owner, this sweet gal is taking no chances that her human will run out on her. Carmen has adapted well to living in a home and even rides well in her foster mom’s car. Carmen is a good eater and is especially fond of peanut butter! Carmen’s foster family recently hosted a gathering where Carmen was exposed to 10 new people. She warmed up well to the visitors and charmed everyone with her sweet demeanor. Everyone thought she was just endearing with that adorable nose! Carmen has what can be likened to a harelip in humans and has a unique looking nose. It doesn't affect her in anyway - it is simply her lucky charm that will help her find someone to love her.

Carmen is on heartworm medication to rid her body of heartworms since her former owner did not care for her very well and she was heartworm positive. Carmine is gentle and calm for her age and will make an excellent companion! She is on the small side for a Golden and weighs about 47 pounds – a perfect sized bundle of love for any living arrangement! She is ready to travel north to meet her forever family, so let Carmen know you are ready to make her part of your life!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog - make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
