My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Baby will be 5 in May. She was shaking and frightened when I picked her up on Friday. She and another yellow lab were transported from NC. The only family Baby had known in all her years had to give her up. They had her from 6 weeks old. They had lost their home 2 years ago and moved into a rental and couldn’t have the dog inside. Baby has lived in an outside pen since then. Baby rode 9 hours in a car with strangers and didn’t sleep the whole time. She did take potty breaks but we separated the dogs because they didn’t know each other and both were experiencing a big change.

Baby is the sweetest, most loving and loyal dog I’ve ever been around. She’s very small. When she first arrived she growled at my 13 year old lab Bailey. It was not an aggressive growl, more of an “I’m scared, leave me alone” growl. I loved on Baby for about 30 minutes. She finally stopped shaking but it was obvious she was still scared. My neighbor came over and we walked the dogs on leashes about 5 feet apart and let them gradually get closer. Baby growled a few times later that night but only because she was scared. She wouldn’t eat for 2 days. We even grilled chicken for her and she wouldn’t eat it. She finally ate late last night and again this morning.

Within 24 hours of her arrival we saw a big change. She cowers behind me when she sees another dog. She’s growled a few more times at Bailey but only when Bailey walked up behind her. I can walk both dogs on leashes and they are fine. I don’t think Baby has ever had any friends. She’s unsure of what to expect around another dog. Baby is very submissive and puts her tail and head down if you say, “No No” or if you go to pet her and catch her off guard. She is a very happy dog, wags her tail a lot and is SO HAPPY to see us when we come home.

She sleeps in a crate at night for now, just so she feels safe. She will often go in there to nap. She has not had any accidents in the house. Both dogs walk around the house freely with no issues, unless Bailey walks up behind her.

I was walking both dogs last night and a cat came along. Baby didn’t growl or try to chase it. (My dog did!) She clearly saw the cat and just looked at it curiously. She’s great around kids too. My neighbor has 4 little kids. They all came to say Hi and she loved the attention.

She needs a loving home with someone who will be patient with her. She is not an aggressive dog, she’s scared and just needs a little time to feel confident she’s safe. It can’t be forced. A home with an older, calm dog would be great. She would probably be great with a small puppy too. She would be so happy to have a home with an owner who works out of the house and loves on her. She really is a sweet girl!!!

Baby needs a foster home. If you have a home that would fit Baby’s needs please email us. All our foster home are too chaotic for her. Help us find a place for Baby to feel secure again.

UPDATE ON BABY!!! Baby is a great dog who has come a long way already. She is still a little skittish but she is getting better every day. She loves to go for car rides and will sit quickly if you pick up her leash. She enjoys being groomed and will sit for quite a long period of time if you brush her. She doesn't take well to sudden movements or loud noises so, we recommend a home without children or a home with older kids. She has almost mastered walking on a leash and she is now walking a couple of miles a day at a slow to moderate pace. She loves company and does not like being left alone for long periods of time so we think she would be a wonderful companion to an older person or a single person who works from home. She does not seem interested in other dogs but probably because right now she is still too confused and worried about what is going on around her. Baby clearly did not have an easy life up to now but she is slowly learning the world out there can be fun. She is a wonderful dog who will make the right family very happy. She just needs someone willing to wait until she relaxes and shows us even more her sweet personality.
