My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

It's always sad to see any animal carelessly abandoned by their owners, but it's especially heartbreaking in the case of a helpless senior like Xena. At least 12-14 years old, sweet Xena was found wandering along the road in horrific condition. She was covered in filth, with nails so long they were curling back into her skin and were caked with dirt. Her ears and teeth were so severely painfully infected that she had pus coming out of her ears and mouth and had trouble eating. She suffered from skin infections and was covered in sores, and was emaciated. We don't know how long she was out on her own, but it's obviously she had not been getting proper care for years before she was abandoned. Despite her discomfort she never showed any aggression as the shelter staff clipped her nails, bathed her, cleaned her ears, and gave her her many medications. As soon as we heard about her we knew that she deserved a chance to spend whatever time she has left in a loving home to make up for her past neglect. Her bloodwork was surprisingly good for her age, and once she was strong enough we had a dental done at her vet and ALL her teeth had to be pulled since they were so rotted. She feels much better now and even eats dry food! She doesn't ask for much- she sleeps a lot but really appreciates her food, her soft bed, and any kind human attention. She's fine with cats and other mellow dog and is looking for a special person to take care of her for the rest of her life, whether it's a few months or a few years.

We do not have a shelter- all our pets are in foster homes and can be seen by appointment only during the week, or at our weekly pet adoptions every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3PM at 3009 Route 10 East next to 5 Star Car Wash (formerly Boulder Car Wash) in Morris Plains (Denville on GPS). To help us better match a pet to your household, we request you fill out an application on our homepage www.secondchance.petfinder.com and copy and paste it into an email, or print it and bring it to our adoption day when you come. Local inquiries only please- we do not do long distance adoptions.
