Rugby's Story...
Rugby: 5 to 7 yr old male red tabby American Shorthair

You can clearly see an real indentation in the fur on this kitty's
neck. ( Look at his neck in the picture of him standing ) He was
recently wearing a tightly fastened collar, the kind that doesn't come off. He did not arrive at the shelter with a collar on. It is hard not to think his owner took off his collar and took him to the shelter and said he/ she had found him stray and brought him in out of the goodness of his or her heart. He is an unusual cat. American Shorthairs are like their British Shorthair counterparts - cobby bodied, muscular, healthy cats. The American Shorthairs come in more
color varieties, like this red tabby, than the British which tend
mostly towards solid colors.. These cats were originally bred to be working mousers. They were bred to be unusually hardy, living outside and able to withstand rain and cold. They live long healthy lives.
This boy has the dense plush coat that ,I am told, sheds rainwater.
It is a delight to touch.

He is a really nice cat. Fun to pet and cuddle with. He has been well cared for and loved. Whoever lost him or gave him up must miss him.
He is still in his post shelter isolation with me but he settled in quickly and is comfortable and friendly. He has a slight chip on an upper canine- you have to look carefully to see it. It is too superficial, I think, to need dental help. However it was enough to make this overcrowded shelter mark him down as "Needs Rescue" which means they will not put him up for adoption ( let the public know about him and see him )and he will quickly be put down if no rescue steps forward for him. I got him with two days to spare.

He has a huge personality and it is all delightful. Even these early photo's show what a character he is. I expect he is cat friendly and maybe dog friendly since he has a great deal of composure and confidence. He would fit well in a lot of different types of homes including busy ones with children. I doubt he needs the quiet, stable sort of home I am usually looking for. I am just guessing here but I expect he would be adorable playing with a pug dog or some such pooch rolling around and letting off some energy. Someone will be so lucky.

He eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.

About Our Rescue Group...
Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of purebred and other exceptional cats.

Our mission is to educate pet owners, breeders, and shelters about our breeds, and to place our cats with Forever Families who will give them the proper care and love they deserve. We carefully match cats with their Forever Families by evaluating each cat's personality, temperament, and special needs. Then we determine the best fit for both the cat and the new family. Please note that we do NOT ship cats.

Our adoption fee is $175 unless otherwise noted. This fee allows us to provide excellent vet care for the cats that really need it. The healthy kitties make it possible for the sick ones to be saved.

Come Meet Our Pets...
Our cats are neutered or spayed, vaccinated and FELV/FIV negative. We are not a shelter. All of our cats are fostered in private homes. We ask that anyone wanting to meet one of our cats first fill out our online application. These cats are treated like members of our family, and we want to ensure that you will do the same.

When you adopt from Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue, you are saving TWO lives - the cat you adopt and the cat who gets to take its place in Rescue!

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Rugby, a Vacaville American Shorthair cat was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a American Shorthair for sale in Vacaville, or seeking a American Shorthair cat from a breeder in Vacaville.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Vacaville already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Vacaville breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even American Shorthair breeders who help with American Shorthair rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Vacaville paves the way for another one to be saved.
