Adopted 4/13/13!!!
Tanner is a beautiful, and we mean BEAUTIFUL, 2-year old pure bred Golden boy who is as sweet as they come. Why Tanner found himself in need of a new home, we cannot understand because this fellow is everything you would hope a Golden would be. But sadly, this sweet, young boy is heartworm positive with a heavier load of heartworms than usually seen in dogs his age. Therefore, SGRR’s vets have been treating Tanner with the slow kill method of heartworm eradication. Since coming to SGRR, Tanner has had a few epileptic seizures that are now under control with some Phenobarbital. Tanner’s adopter will need to continue with this medication and the related periodic blood work.
Tanner is a big boy and when he is at his proper weight, he will top out at around 100 pounds. He is a gentle giant and wants nothing more than to be as close as he can to his human. Tanner’s foster mom said that for a young dog, Tanner has an “old soul.” with a more moderate energy level. He is one of those very special dogs that just melts your heart when you meet him. He is good with people, kids, dogs, and is even OK with cats.
Tanner is doing wonderfully and is nearly done with his heartworm treatment. His fosters in AL are increasing his walking in small increments, which is crucial when adding activity to a dog who has been treated for heartworm. He started his leashed walks with a short stroll around the block and is now up to walking a half mile. Tanner gets so excited when he sees his leash now. He wants to play but he still has to be kept calm so he doesn't have an embolism during this phase of treatment. A little Yorkie visited with him the other day and Tanner let the little fellow climb all over him and nip his ears – he is a very tolerant dog! He is up to 91 pounds and he is simply STUNNING!
Tanner is fully vetted, neutered, and will be ready to come up north to his forever home on 4/13! If your forte is TLC, then be sure to consider adopting Tanner. His overflowing love for his humans will be a very sweet reward for the bit of extra care he needs. (Be sure to watch his video.)

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
