Duke's Story...
Adopted 7/27/13!!!

Duke is a happy, fun, and loving Golden mix puppy who is about 1 year old! He was discarded by his former owners in a neighborhood in AL. The kind people in the area fed Duke and called animal control so this sweet little fellow wouldn’t be hit by a car. Duke is a very social boy and has never met a stranger! He is great with kids and loves all human companions, just wanting to be oh-so-close to them! Duke has a sweet spirit and not a mean bone in his body! He has a cuddly soft, shaggy look that just makes you want to snuggle up with him.

When this little fellow was first found, he weighed only 21 pounds and was very shy. But Duke is now flourishing in his foster home in Rhode Island and has put on close to 20 pounds. Not only has he gained much needed weight, Duke has gained confidence as well! While Duke is still not totally looking his very best, the good nutrition he is receiving will have his body and coat filling in and he will be quite the looker in no time!

Duke is good with children, travels well in the car, and is nearly house-trained. Duke’s foster mom tells us that Duke has grown very fond of his foster family and greets her enthusiastically when she comes home. He sleeps with them at night and likes to give kisses but is not an in-your-face type of dog. Just watch how cute he is in his video! Duke walks well on his leash and his foster mom said he usually walks right next to her or behind her. He pays little attention to the cats or squirrels they see on their walks, but he corrects his foster sister with little heal nips if she does not walk the way he thinks she should – funny to watch the little guy do this to the bigger dog! Before she was adopted, he loved playing with his foster sister, Naomi, a big Lab mix. Duke’s foster mom said the pair wrestled and played with their toys together all day long. Duke now has a new foster sister, SGRR's Macy, who he is mentoring and helping to feel comfortable in her foster home.

Duke’s former life, where he was treated poorly and was on death’s doorstep from starvation, is behind him now! SGRR promised this furry angel that he would never be roaming the streets again looking for food! He surely deserves to have a forever home and a second chance at a great life! Duke has been fully vetted and neutered. Now he is ready to begin his new life with a family to call his own. Duke will adjust easily to a new family and when you show him love, he will give you ten times the love in return. Duke really doesn't ask for much –all he wants is to be a member of your "family.”

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Duke, a New Canaan Golden Retriever dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Golden Retriever for sale in New Canaan, or seeking a Golden Retriever dog from a breeder in New Canaan.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in New Canaan already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a New Canaan breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Golden Retriever breeders who help with Golden Retriever rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in New Canaan paves the way for another one to be saved.
