My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! My name is Max and I have lived my entire 6 years of life outside in a small pen with gravel to stand and walk on. I slept in a hard doghouse and never got to come out for a walk or to get love. When my pen mate died over the summer I was so lonely that cried each night. My nice neighbor asked my owner if she could find me a home and sadly he was happy to get rid of me. I am now in foster care and I love to be outside with grass under my feet. I love the long walks that my foster parents take me on and I could go for miles if they would let me. I enjoy the people that pet me along the way and oh the smells…just yummy!
I am a very handsome boy and after my first bath my foster mom could not believe how shiny and soft my coat was. I may be part beagle and part basset because I weigh 35 pounds but that gives me the cutest face and big paws. I am not fat, just big boned. I am being fostered with 3 other beagles and even though they are ok I don’t really hang out with them much. I would much rather just lie in the corner of the couch and nap or lie beside my foster dad and get petted. I am a very calm fella and will follow you around some too. I’m not interested in toys or even playing fetch but I do enjoy the fenced back yard so I can go out and sniff around. I am house trained and I even know how to use a doggie door. I am a quiet boy and very laid back. My foster parents have seldom heard me bark.
When I first came into my new environment I was a little snippy with my foster parents. I didn’t want them making me get off the bed or cleaning my ears. I am getting better each day as I learn to trust them and experience all the new things about living inside. But my foster parents say I am a good boy and will be a loyal and loving companion. I would love to have a family to call my own.
UPDATE 1/5/14

We have been fostering Max for 2.5 months and he has come a long way since we first took him in from a life of living outside in a small pen. He had a lot of adjusting to do and needed work on socializing. We have worked very hard on helping him with both and he is doing quite well. He needs an owner that will be dedicated to continuing his socialization. He loves my husband and when we are home from work I can usually find him curled up beside him on the couch. He loves me too and will come up to be petted often. We take him on walks daily and he just adores them. We take him hiking on trails at an area park and he walks up to the all the people on the trail to get petted. He would do great with a person that was home most of the time. If that is the case then he does not need another dog. If he is left alone for long periods of time then he would do best with another dog in the home for company.

When we first got him he was snippy with us out of fear. Once he learned to trust us we have had no problems. We can pick him up to put him in the car (he rides great!) and he listens to us when we make him get off the bed. But the corner of the couch is his and he is allowed to be on the furniture. Hopefully he will be allowed as well in his new home. That is where he hangs out while we are at work and where he sleeps at night. He is a good boy that deserves a loving home.
