Rescue FAQs

Journey Home Dog Rescue is a volunteer-based IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that began in the summer of 2005 with a rescue mission to Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. Our immediate goals at that time were to: -Transfer as many dogs as possible out of "high-kill" dog pounds in the region into a temporary "no-kill" shelter -Transport as many dogs as possible back to Maine for re-homing During that first road trip, we rescued 70 dogs from imminent euthanasia. We also relocated and helped re-home 14 of them to the greater Portland area. In the months following the storm, we traveled back to the Gulf Coast region to work with other animal welfare groups as they continued to rescue, reunite, and re-home animals left homeless by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process involves an application process, including a home visit with the prospective dog and a veterinary reference check. The adoption fee varies based on the circumstances of the dog and can range from $50 - $350 depending on veterinary costs. We try to find a home with the best fit to help insure the dog's long-term success.
