East Lake Pet Orphanage

East Lake Pet Orphanage is a non-profit organization, dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of homeless and unwanted animals in the Dallas area.

When admitted for adoption, each animal is given a thorough examination by a veterinarian. Dogs are tested for Heartworm/Ehrlichia/Lyme diseases if old enough, and cats are tested for FIV (feline "AIDS") and FeLV (feline leukemia). Age appropriate vaccinations and flea/heartworm prevention are given, and the pet is treated for intestinal and external parasites. Additional problems are treated on an individual basis. All animals are microchipped and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. In the first 30 days after adoption we offer a complimentary physical examination, nutritional assessment and wellness consultation to help make sure that the new adoptee has the best start in life in their new home. The current adoption donation for dogs and cats is $165.00. Vaccinations for the first year after adoption are discounted by 20%.

Additional adoption info

he first step in adopting would be to come by our facility to meet our orphans in person to see if the animal that you are interested in is a good match for you—after all, a very large part of the adoption process is based on finding the right chemistry. There are a lot of good people, and a lot of good animals, but that doesn’t mean that they automatically go together and selecting the right animal for your particular household is a very personal decision.

If you find an orphan that you feel is right for your family, you will then need to fill out an adoption application. After submission of an adoption application, the animal is placed on hold while we process your application. Processing of an adoption application can take as little as 24 hours or as much as a week or even longer if there is any missing information on the application.

Once an adoption is approved, there is an adoption agreement to be filled out and a goody bag for us to review before sending any of the orphans home.

PLEASE NOTE: Applications will be delayed and can be disqualified or a hold rescinded if not filled out completely. Critical information necessary for verification is contact information for your current employer or the employer for the wage earner in the household (with the name of the wage earner and relationship to them), contact information for your landlord where applicable, and contact information for the veterinarian(s) who have treated any pets you have been financially responsible for. For people who are living at home with parents, we will need parental contact information to verify that they are okay having another pet in the home. If they are the ones financially responsible for the pet, they will need to be the ones to complete the application.

Pet ownership is a large responsibility and a 10-18 year commitment depending on the size, breed, and species you adopt. Research the breed/species of the pet you wish to adopt thoroughly to ensure you are well prepared for the responsibility before making the commitment. Intelligent, active dogs and puppies, particularly the working breeds like shepherds, hounds and Huskies, need a lot of training, exercise, and mental stimulation to become well-behaved pets. Happy pet ownership begins with you. All pets, much like children, need consistency, clear boundaries, rules, guidelines, positive reinforcement, and exercise/things to do in addition to a good diet and proper medical care to be happy and healthy. Consider whether the time you have available matches the time required by the pet you wish to adopt is a good fit. Keep in mind as well that it can take up to a month after the pet goes home for them to be adjusted to their surroundings and new schedule fully as well, during which time they will likely not be on their best behavior as they adjust to the new rules of the house.
