My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Woodrow
We love Woodrow. This handsome boy is a gentle giant. He was surrendered to us after his original owner walked away, leaving him locked in an apartment. The apartment worker who found him tried keeping him, but the manager wouldn’t let him. As a result, “Woody” has been safe with us for nearly five years, but living at our shelter is no way to live.
Woody is so loved by our staff and volunteers, but our greatest wish is to see him land softly with a person or family of his own. Woody is now 7.5 years old. He’s a gem that deserves so much more in life. Woody loves people. He lives for attention. When he sees his favorite people, his whole body wiggles and he can hardly contain his excitement. In addition to people, Woody lives for water – sprinklers, pools, lakes, hoses, buckets – you name it if it has water Woody loves it! Our favorite summertime fun is to watch Woody jump in the baby pools and splash around. Woody is still an active pup, but he’s calming down and maturing.
Woodrow is housetrained. He walks well on a leash and loves going for walks. He also loves car rides. Woodrow is exceptionally smart and learns quickly. He is well behaved in his kennel and out. Woodrow is just a big sweetheart towards people. Woodrow doesn’t seem to like dogs or cats and will do best as an only pet. Having gone without love, food, toys and other resources early on, Woody is known to guard his resources when other dogs are nearby.
Woody gets occasional sleepovers with a favorite volunteer. He loves these times away and transitions easily into the home environment. Woody may be a bigger boy, but he lives small and he’s quiet. He needs a fenced yard to play and sun himself. He will make for a fantastic companion for a less active person or family. He’d be a great travel buddy and constant companion. He relishes quiet time, soft blankets a kind hand and snuggle time. He’s well-mannered, friendly, affectionate, calm, quiet, and dignified. Even after five years, he’s still a big, silly and goofy hippo, but lately we’ve seen signs of depression in our once happy hippo. A little less sparkle, a little less excitement and a little less interest in things. Woody needs someone to show him that his life matters and who understands dog behavior and can build up Woody’s confidence again. We pray that his furever person comes for him and gives him his happy back. If interested in giving Woody a soft landing, please get your application in
Once an application is submitted online, you will receive an email saying your application has been successfully received. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours, please check to make sure all application fields were completed or please email us at All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with a current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: under tab All Adoptable Animals.
Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also rescued from local and area Animal Controls. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.
Adoptions and meet and greets are scheduled by appointment only. Complete an application and someone will be in touch just as soon as they can. An application doesn’t commit you or us to an adoption, but it allows our coordinator to begin the review process.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: . For cat application, go to: . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

More about this shelter

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.
