My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Callie
Beautiful, sweet, playful, and affectionate Callie. We rescued her from a high kill animal control. She was a young pup at the time and we thought for sure she’d be adopted given her sunny looks and bubbly personality. Sadly, she’s been overlooked again and again. Callie is five years old now. Her whole life has been spent behind bars and for absolutely nothing she did, except be born and abandoned.
We love this girl beyond measure. She has been nothing but amazing since arriving those many years ago. The shelter confinement has taken its toll on her psyche though. She is still outgoing for those she knows. She loves her people, and has fun in the yard, but Callie is afraid of the outside world. She’s afraid of getting in a car. Perhaps because the last time that happened, her entire life changed. That said, we believe that once in a loving, stable and quiet home with a fenced yard and a bit of time to get used to her ‘freedom,’ Callie is going to be the most loyal and loving companion. She’s become a little shy with new people. Not aggressive, but reticent to get involved, knowing she most likely won’t see them again. After more than three years of not meeting a lot of new people, this is not unexpected. BUT, for those she loves and trusts, her bond is strong, and her attention fills up your whole heart. We’ve seen many of our longer-term residents, once under the gentle guidance and love of their family, blossom into confident dogs that learn to love car rides, go for walks, meet new people and even get to know other dogs, under supervision of course.
Despite her reluctance to embrace the unknown, Callie is a hoot and keeps us laughing with her antics, her happy tail wag and laughing smile. She is incredibly friendly when feeling safe. She LOVES being with her people. She loves having her ears and belly scratched. She loves to run and romp in the yard. She can be a strong leash walker, but knowing that prevents surprises. Callie is affectionate and welcomes attention, a lot of it! Callie is a shelter favorite. She doesn’t tend to like other dogs (maybe it’s fear of the unknown) and chases cats. We think Callie will do best as an only pet. She is a fantastic girl with so much love and companionship to offer her family or person. Once the walls that Callie’s built up to protect herself come down, she’s all in. She is definitely a keeper for the person or family willing to give her a chance. Might that be you?
If interested in Callie, please submit an application online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application
Once an application is submitted online, you will receive an email saying your application has been successfully received. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours, please check to make sure all application fields were completed or please email us at smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with a current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website:
http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.
Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also rescued from local and area Animal Controls. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.
Adoptions and meet and greets are scheduled by appointment only. Complete an application and someone will be in touch just as soon as they can. An application doesn’t commit you or us to an adoption, but it allows our coordinator to begin the review process.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

More about this shelter

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.
