My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Rylee
Rylee is a young and gorgeous lab/retriever mix. She is eight months young and ready to take on the world. We pulled Rylee out of a high kill shelter after her owner insisted she be picked up and dumped there. If it weren’t for the nice officer who saw through the owner’s antics, Rylee could have lost her life. Instead, she is safe at our no kill shelter.
She is a beautiful girl. She is getting used to the shelter and all the new people she is meeting. Rylee is an energetic and curious dog. She can be a little bit of a busy body exploring whatever she can explore. She was neglected and ignored for most of her life, but she responds well to human kindness and guidance. She is very smart and responds to positive reinforcement and treats…she loves treats!
Rylee loves running in the play yards and snuggling with staff. She can be very affectionate once she gets to know you. She is learning how to walk on a leash. She is strong, but we’ve started her on leash training as well as some common commands. We think Rylee may already be house-trained or at least close. With proper training and consistency, and an opportunity to exercise her energy, we expect that she’ll settle in and calm down. A fenced yard is a must for Rylee. It seems as if no one ever paid her any attention, which having heard her story, is probably true. She is seeking a human bond, and she tries so hard to please. She is as sweet and as friendly as they come. Rylee has every potential to be an incredible companion, but she will need a family experienced with this breed and willing to commit to her well-being. So much neglect has occurred in her early years, that it will take a little effort to help Rylee become a calm and well-behaved family companion. She is exuberant and building trust through consistency will be the key to helping her in her journey to settle. Rylee seems to like other dogs. She is a big, goofy puppy who likes to play and chase. She is going to be a great dog for that person or family, willing to give her attention and help her be her best doggie self. We’ll test Rylee with cats for potential adopters. This girl is amazing.
If interested in welcoming Rylee to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Please use the downloadable application found on our homepage.

Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) and leave a message to make sure we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

More about this shelter

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.
