My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET RUSTY. Rusty is a Pomeranian who is 6-1/2 years old and weighs 6.6 pounds. He is being fostered in Jacksonville, FL. Due to Covid-19, dogs being fostered in Florida must be adopted in Florida. No exceptions can be made.

UPDATED BIO 10/20/2020: Rusty has been in his foster home for 7 weeks now and he has made so much progress during that time. When he arrived, he was on antibiotics and steroids and had just spent 12 days at a shelter. His lab results indicated potential Lupus. It was thought that due to his horrible condition upon arrival at the shelter the Lupus results could be a false positive. However, Rusty needed to complete several weeks of steroids before he could be re-tested. The results are in – he does not have Lupus – hooray! There were x-rays done when he arrived at the shelter and although there were some initial concerns, it appears that his poor body condition was the reason.

Rusty recently saw the dogter and his weight is now 6.6 pounds, which is a good weight for him. All health issues identified when at the shelter are no longer a problem. It is felt that his horrific condition when he was found tied to the front door of the shelter contributed to the problems previously identified. By giving Rusty proper care and nutrition, it has resulted in positive health benefits. Rusty has received all his vaccinations which were delayed until his Lupus testing was repeated. At this time, Rusty is cleared to be adopted – great news! As with all dogs, Rusty now only needs routine and regular veterinary follow-up. He is experiencing problems with allergies like the rest of us this time of year. This can be treated with Benadryl. The allergies that we are feeling are also affecting him causing some coughing and itching. Hydrocodone has been temporarily prescribed for his coughing.

Rusty had a few things to tell you about how he is doing – keep reading:

Hi y'all, Rusty here. It has been nice here with foster mom but I'm ready to get settled into my fur-ever home. In the beginning, I was not sure about my new place and person. It took time for me to learn that I was now in a safe place and I could learn to trust people. I do not like being left alone and would prefer to go with you when you have errands. I bark loud and lots when left alone. When you return, I will be overly excited and bark and jump to let you know how happy I am for your return.

I am being a good boy and no longer need those belly bands. I do my business on our walks and will use the puppy pads in a pinch. I love going for walks but let me warn you, I am fast. There are lots of smells out there and I got to be sure to check them all out. I also enjoy being able to run fast in the fenced yard but foster mom says that's not a requirement!

What's your toy situation like? I really like those squeaky ones and I'm really good at getting them to make noise. I have lots here in my foster home and I keep them scattered around the house so I can get to them whenever I want. As soon as foster mom picks them up and puts them away, I go behind her and pull them out. No fun when they are in a box! I enjoy playing with my toys and my person. The humans toss them so I can chase them. I wonder if they want me to bring them back? I might need to think about that. Are you that kind of person who will want to play with me cuz that’s what I really love? I am also working on my Sit and Come commands and getting better. I now sleep in the big bed with foster mom and kitty who still will not let me play with her. I even learned to use the steps to get on the big bed – see how smart I am? At night, I like to tunnel under the covers. Foster mom put a special blanket on the bed so I can use that for my tunnel. She thinks it's too hot to get under the covers with her now. I hope you will consider letting me be part of your family.

Foster Mom here:

Rusty can be a very active boy some of the time while quiet and sleeping for extended periods the next. As soon as I move, he is up and running to see where I'm going. He will follow me everywhere. Based on his behaviors, I suspect he was left alone or crated for extended periods of time and has trust issues. He takes time getting comfortable with his person. It took a while but he is now spending time wanting to be close to me. He enjoys lying next to his person and being petted and belly rubs. He has excellent hearing and will bark and take off running at any noise no matter whether you hear it or not. He has gradually gotten accustomed to the usual noises around the house, but that has taken weeks for him to adjust. His barking is his biggest issue right now. Rusty will be your new door bell. When he wants your attention, he will get one of his toys and try to get your attention. We are working on these behaviors but it takes time. There are times he does better but then forgets. He likes to go for walks but has a very fast pace! He enjoys a fenced yard but that is not a requirement. Due to Covid-19, there are no adoptions out of state for any of our dogs. If interested, please submit an application for consideration.

PLEASE NOTE: Rusty needs a home with at least one stay-at-home parent and no children under 14 years of age due to his small size.
