My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Here in Canada

Name: Mikey (20220812-02)
Weight: 70 lbs
Age: 7 year
Gender: Male
Breed: Lab Mix
Color: White with grey spots and brown ring around right eye

Special needs: deaf

Good With Adults: Yes
Good With Kids: Yes, ideally older kids
Good With Other Dogs: Yes
Good With Kids: YES! He lived with a little girl who was 4 yrs old until he left and the little girl was 8 years old. Good With Adults: YES (men and women)
Good With Dogs: YES/great with females and good with friendly males (he plays with 2 here) He enjoys playing here despite being older than one dog.
Good With Cats: He seems to be fine with my cats, just sniffs them and walks away. My cats are very dog friendly so not sure if I would leave him unsupervised in the house with them until you are sure.
Housebroken: YES
Crate Trained: YES (he was crate trained here but not before, he had his own chair) He will sleep in at night but cries/barks loud if in it in daytime. He is not destructive if left on his own, he just likes to lounge on the couch.
Energy Level: Medium energy unless playing and then likes a nap afterward! He can be a bit stubborn if he doesn’t want to do something but has shown zero aggression to people or animals since in my care.
Can be handled/touched YES (Mike loves pets and brushes and cuddles. He loves to just lay by your feet after a walk or playtime.
Flight Risk: It is unlikely if he has a yard to run in and plenty of walks. He also comes when called 90 percent of the time now with his deaf dog training! He would not do well in a crate all day (a gated off area would be more suitable)
NOTE: All rescues are a flight risk and should be walked with double leash or leash and collar and slip lead just in case! Should have secure, high enough fencing also or a long line on until he feels at home. Mike likes to dig so supervision is a good idea in yard.
Food Aggressive: Never!! He will sit for a treat with the others and I can take his food away from him.
Walks On Leash: He is great to walk, he knows how to heel. He will pull a bit if you don’t train him and he walks on a martingale collar. (collar should not be left on in house) We work on his obedience with hand signals each day. He knows sit/ down and comes when called with his hand signals if watching you!
Destructive: No! Loves stuffed, frozen kongs, not recommended to have bones or flat chew treats as he gets upset tummy. NO FLAT CHEWS OR CRUMPS TEETH CLEANERS.
Needs a Yard: No, he loves walks and hanging out on the deck with you! He does love the yard though!
Needs a HomeWith a Second Dog: No, (he loves people) but he would do well with another older, friendly dog!
Can Live in Apartment: NO! Nor a townhouse! Due to being DEAF Mike can’t hear so he barks loud when his people are not around!
Special Needs: Yes, Mike as mentioned is DEAF and was probably born that way! He will at some point soon require dental care as he has periodontal disease. It is recommended he stay on flea and tick year round due to his medical history. Owner reported him as having bitten two people although the circumstances around this were that Mike had not met them before and being deaf he would have been startled (no medical attention was required). Of special note: Caution should always be the rule (ie: leash on and/or muzzled (at vet) First few weeks dogs need decompression.

Please don’t ignore this sweet boy as he has been ignored for too long!
Mike has lots of love to give! We will give you the deaf dog training free!

Go meet their pets

The majority of our dogs are adopted before traveling to Canada. We are a foster based rescue, so a meet & greet can be arranged with some dogs that are already here.

More about this rescue

We are so much more than a dog rescue! We are a community of incredible volunteers with one goal in mind: To help dogs in need find a loving, forever home. We are moms and dads, sisters and daughters, sons and brothers from all walks of life. We have come together with one goal in mind: To help dogs that need it most. Those on death row, those lost, those hungry those broken-hearted. We will work and work and work until we find a family for each one of them. We will not stop until each one of our dogs has the one thing they wish for: the safety of a home and the love of a family. We are foster based. This means we do not have a facility, dogs are pulled from shelters and put in to comfortable homes until they are adopted. Each foster volunteer allows us to save one more dog and help him/her find a loving forever home. Since 2015, NDR has saved over 9500 dogs. These dogs are ALIVE today because of we cared and we worked and we cried and we pleaded and we drove and we checked and we advocated and we fought and we begged and, in the end, we made this possible without funding or paid staff. With no shelter or corporate sponsors. With nothing but the will of our amazing volunteers working together to help save the lives of the dogs we can help. We keep our heads down, we focus on what we need to do to help our dogs and we go to work. We have made a difference in the lives of those dogs that are fortunate enough to be ours.
