My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rockaway Park, NY - DASH is a gorgeous 1 year old girl, most likely a lab-greyhound mix. This 60 lb girl stands taller than a lab but is very slender and looks like a much smaller dog when she's curled up asleep. She came to us afraid and traumatized after an owner surrender and a month in a noisy municipal shelter, but has blossomed unbelievably with training, structure, boundaries and positive reinforcement. She is sweet and affectionate with people she knows, is eager to please and will lay her head in one of our laps if she wants to snuggle. Dash is curious, smart and a very quick learner who has mastered a number of commands including sit, down, touch and wait. She is food-motivated in training and takes treats gently. As with all puppies and adolescent dogs, she must have daily exercise so that she does not become anxious or destructive, but her fosters have found that if she starts her day with a good walk, some running and playing in a fenced yard or - her favorite - a trip to the dog park, she is calm, balanced and inclined to nap often during the day. (We have learned that they call greyhounds "the world's fastest couch potato.") Off leash in the dog run she approaches new dogs tentatively but with no aggression whatsoever, warms up quickly and seeks out play with other big dogs. On leash she is still nervous and reactive to passing dogs, but we are making progress with training and she otherwise has great leash manners. She is cautious and may bark or growl when new people approach on the street or enter the house, but we have seen steady improvement with training and expect this behavior to continue to diminish with the appropriate guidance. Her size and prey drive do not make her a good fit for homes with small dogs or cats - she has been living with two small dogs, but has to be monitored very closely or segregated, as she wants to chase them. She is crate trained and will put herself in her crate for naps or to sleep overnight. The ideal household for Dash usually has someone home often during the day, is willing to commit to getting her daily exercise and is either dog-experienced or is willing to learn how to help her continue to build confidence and good manners. She could do very well with any situation from a single owner who works from home to a family with older children and/or another large, friendly dog.
