Guero is a short stacked pup who is about 11 months old and surrendered to ACCT on October 28th, 2023 due to him becoming too much for his pregnant owner. Guero is playful, energetic and just an overall happy puppy. He takes time to warm up initially in the kennel, but once out, he is a brand new dog! His owner shared that he is "very active, very playful, lots of energy and very friendly. Guero's family dynamics included two adults and 2 children; an 11 and 12 year old. His family shared that he was in the process of being crate trained and that he knew the following commands: sit, lay, and "hand in spanish. Guero's family shared that he is very obedient and lovable. His owner shared that since the pregnancy he became "a little bit aggressive and wants my attention more". Upon contacting the owner to clarify this, she said that he was just jumpy and mouthy.
Upon entering the shelter, Guero had difficulties adjusting to his new environment. Guero had been reactive in kennel, hard staring and barking with a tucked tail, growling and (minimally) charging the day he had arrived. Guero would love a home where he can just let his guard down so he can continue being his puppy self. Guero's new family should give him time to decompress and without a doubt provide him with endless treats and rope toys that he goes crazy for!
On October 31st, 2023 staff shared the following about Guero: "I approached Guero's kennel and he let out a single bark and retreated to the other end of his kennel. I spent about 15 or so minutes attempting to remove him from the kennel as he avoided me and the leash. He did respond positively to treats and is a big fan of them! I closed the kennel a few times and stepped away. I kneeled down a few times as well to see if he wanted to come closer. He would approach ever so slightly and then retreat. At no point did he ever, lunge or hard bark. I finally had a quick moment to leash him when he was near the kennel door. I leashed him and he exited without any issue. We walked through the kennel, lobby - past a dog (he was unfazed) and then outside. We met two dogs through the fence at the welcome center kennels. Guero seemed unsure of what to make of the one dog who was whining. His tail remained mid level. He sniffed both dogs through the fence. He didn't seem to mind the dogs.
In the run, I dropped the leash and he explored the yard. He is a pretty short and tiny pup. He gets his occasional zoomies where he runs back and forth. Guero enjoys cuddles very much and would much rather be snuggled into your arms. Guero is a smart boy who knows sit. He allowed complete handling outside - touching of ears, face, paws and tail with no issues. I did not experience arousal concerns with him. I ran back and forth and never did he escalate. He did not get mouthy or overly jumpy while we spent time together.
10/31/23 per staff: I visited Guero again today. He was a LOT easier to remove from the kennel. He didn't hesitate at all. He was eager to greet people in the lobby and even tried climbing up into the lap of an adoption counselor.
