My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I was found wandering the streets in Indianapolis, Indiana in late September 2023. I was scared at the city shelter and so grumpy that it was hard for people to handle me there. The nice people at Chihuahua Rescue found me a foster family. When they picked me up, I was much happier and not grumpy at all!
The shelter people said I was around 5 years old. I could not tell them I was an old man who had a family before they found me! When my foster Mom took me to the doctor, they found out because they discovered the original microchip that was implanted 11 years ago. Unfortunately, the microchip company didn’t have any information about my family, just where the microchip was from. All they knew was my name was “Buddy”. I was so excited when my foster family started calling me Buddy! I had no idea who that “Newt” guy was! My foster Mom said she did everything she could to find my family, but she thinks maybe my parents were elderly and passed away. I wish I could talk and tell her what happened to me!
The doctor cleaned my teeth for me and discovered an abscessed tooth that needed removed. He also noticed a cherry in my eye and a fatty tumor on my chest. He said something about a bad heart murmur too. I don’t know what those things are, but he isn’t going to give me any medicine because they don’t seem to bother me right now.
At my foster home there are two dogs around my size. They don’t bother me, and I don’t bother them. That is just how I like it too! There are also two cats. I do not care much for those pesky animals! When they swat my butt I chase them away! My foster Mom has to remind me that I’m a guest and I have to be nice to the “kitties”. I would prefer they weren’t here, but since they are, I try real hard to get along.
One of my favorite things about my foster home is the soft toys! Every evening we play fetch and tug! One time my foster sister, the shih tzu, wanted to play too. I told her NO! My foster parents were quick to tell us no fighting! So we haven’t done that again.
But the BEST thing about my foster home is my foster DAD!! I love him so much! I love to sit in the recliner with him, I love to follow him around the house, and I get concerned when he leaves. But I just go sit with my foster Mom and she reassures me he will come back. They tried to put me in my crate when the whole family leaves, or they go to bed, but I will bark and cry. I’m too mature to tear stuff up, but I like to just wait with my foster siblings and rest on the sofa until they return. I also like to sleep in their bed and be up against Dad or Mom’s back at night. I love to cuddle and be where my people are!
I really want a home where there is an older man, or someone who is home most of the time; or even with someone who will take me with them when they leave. I love walks and car rides! I don’t mind the teenager at my foster home, but I wouldn’t want to be around any little kids who might poke at me and get in my space. If you think this sounds good please send in your application!

Additional adoption info

**If you are unable to pay the adoption fee ($250 and up), we are unable to place a dog in your care. Being unable to meet the financial obligations of pet care (recurrent or emergent) is one of many reasons why so many of these pets end up in rescue. It's not lack of love.**
We require an adoption application, and then we will check references. We also check with vets. If the person is not LOCAL then we will partner with a local animal control to complete a home visit.
There are adoption fees associated with the costs of veterinary care of the pet. We require an adoption contract to be signed to finalize the adoption process and we have an agreement that all our pets are to be Chihuahua Rescue Indiana Inc. pets for LIFE. In other words, in the event that they can not stay in their adoptive home, they are not to be surrendered to another individual or rescue.

More about this rescue

Chihuahua Rescue Indiana Inc. is a non profit, all volunteer rescue working with Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes. The pets are housed in individual volunteer foster homes, not kennels or shelters until they are adopted permanently. We get to know our animals and therefore can tell the potential adopter what the traits of the animal are and what home would be the best for the pet. We are dedicated to the adoption, education, rescue and transportation of the Chihuahua breed. We believe that every Chihuahua deserves a loving home.
