My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Scarlett. This 1 ½-year-old small, sweet, funny, tough, brave girl is looking for a very special home. Scarlett came to us from a person in Detroit who had found her and thought she had been hit by a car due to some mobility issues. We took her in and found out she had not been hit by a car but had a neurological issue. Scarlett has Polyneuropathy or SHPN1. This is a rare condition, and it's only found in Siberians. It affects mobility with weakness and can cause tremors. Scarlett only suffers from minor tremors at this time. Due to this, Scarlett needs some extra TLC and some assistance with her mobility.

Don't think this condition slows this little lady down; she can, and loves, to hang with the big dogs. She needs to be monitored so she doesn't overdo it. Her body may be a little weak, but her mind is strong! She loves all dogs and enjoys being outdoors to play with her pack or hang out; in the winter, she will need some gear to keep her warm as she does not have the usual Husky coat. She is quite the talker and will even sing along with Alexa when the mood strikes her. She loves one soft toy to nibble and sniff, and a snuffy mat is one of her favorite pastimes. She can be picky about food and treats, but we have a list of her preferences. She can grumble when other dogs get near her food bowl, but it's all talk. She likes to play for exercise, but she really likes to take walks. Given her condition, she has a stroller she rides in, much like the princess she is, and while she doesn't want other dogs too close to it, she loves to be out and about. This is great mental stimulation for her. Scarlett loves attention, petting, and all the affection she can get. She does flinch a bit when being petted, which could be part of her condition. She will require a mostly carpeted home or a home with many rugs. She can't handle wood floors as she slips. She is also unable to go up or down stairs. She also needs a large foam bed to stretch out on. We know this is a lot. It takes a lot of responsibility, time commitment, and a lot of soul searching to know if she is the right dog for you, but, as her foster Mom can attest, the reward of caring for and loving Miss Scarlett can fill your heart with pride and joy. So, if you think you can give this special girl a forever home, we would love to hear from you and answer any questions. Let's show Scarlett that, frankly, my dear, we DO give a "darn"!

Scarlett is in a foster home located in Clinton Twp.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Application:

The first step for adoption is the application. Filling out the detailed application lets us know which husky would be a good fit for your family. We think all of our dogs are perfect the way they are, but every home is not. This is why they have ended up with us. We are very thorough with this step. The first thing we do is review your application, if your veterinary references are up to par then we reach out to be sure you're still interested. Next, we contact the personal references, so please be prepared. It helps speed the process if you let your veterinarian and personal references know we will be contacting them. This step can take up to 1-2 weeks, although we try to get through it sooner.

Home Visit:

We will set up a good time with you for one of our volunteers to come meet with you. They interview all the household members, and make sure a Siberian Husky is suited for you. They will also help you understand the breed, and what they need as far as a family.

Meet & Greet:

After you have been approved for adoption, we can set you up to meet the dogs! You must bring any current pets to make sure they will get along. We have a network of foster homes, so it is preferred that you are willing to drive to meet any specific dog you are interested in. If for any specific reason you are not able to drive, transportation can usually be arraigned through volunteers, by a case-by-case basis.

More about this rescue

The mission of the Hairy Houdini Siberian Husky Rescue is to help Siberian Huskies and Husky mixes in need and educate about the proper care of the breed.

We are a foster home-based rescue organization serving all of Michigan. Once the dogs are in our care, they get completely vetted, altered, micro-chipped, temperament tested, monitored and cared for by our wonderful foster program. Once we have matched the personality of the dog with the perfect home, they get adopted! Application, home visit, contract and adoption donation apply.
