My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Grandpa Ace is just the sweetest old man, with so much personality and love to give! He would love to spend his days; strolling through your neighborhood, snacking on treats, using his plushy toys as a pacifier, playing tug, napping, and most importantly looking up at you as much as he can with his soulful eyes—absolutely worthy of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" playing in the background.

Ace (short for Ason) was recently surrendered to PAWS, after his previous owners were unable to continue caring for him. He had been in that same home since back in the day good ol' days of puppyhood, and would love to find a home to call his own for the remainder of his golden years. For most of his stay with us Ace has been in shelter, but he recently had a weekend getaway and has had some short-term foster stints where he's gotten to show off his true best friend and sidekick potential. He has even been described as, "a perfect houseguest" and an excellent coworker while they worked from home.

Ace has lived well with both adults and children, and is the kindest soul to everyone that he spends time with. He'll gently nuzzle his head into you for pets, and melt right next to you for his favorite any-time-of-day snuggles. And, when he gets the opportunity to make himself really comfortable, he'll roll right over to gently request some belly rubs and more pets. In addition to being an excellent companion, Ace is also reportedly housebroken and well-behaved at home. For commands, he knows "sit", "stay", "come", and "shake/give paw" and is eager to perform them!

Ace is used to being spoken to like a human, and also has a very human-like personality and mannerisms—like shifting his eyebrows around a bit when he's wanting to make a point about his feelings or opinions, or to gently request some of what you're eating. He can sometimes take a little while to adjust to new routines (and be a bit fussy to tell you when he is stressed!), so he will need patience during the big (but very exciting!) change of being welcomed into a new home. Ace's adopter(s) should be prepared to give him the time that he needs to decompress at home, and plan to spend the time and energy getting to know him and his needs during this transitional period of his life.

In Ace's more spunky moments (see here), he still has impressive zoomies and loves playing with his toys, and even playing fetch with a partner. He also enjoys going on shorter walks, playing in a yard, and hanging out with other dogs. Ace is not a fit for homes with cats, but has previously lived with other dogs, and he has done well coexisting with other respectful dogs that match his energy. So, we think that he could be a good fit to join in on some canine companionship pending an initial meet, and slow introductions at home.

Ace is trying his best to not to let his age slow him down one bit, and he still goes on walks despite some arthritis that he requires pain medication for daily. He would love to find a forever home that generally easily accessible both inside and outside, and that doesn't have a lot of stairs that he'll have to climb to keep him comfortable. Ace will also need to be established with a full-service veterinarian to continue monitoring his overall health and wellness. One of our vets that had the chance to meet him and sing his praises said that he's a very sweet boy, who will readily take treats right from your hand during visits to the vet!

Ace is truly the most charming gentleman, and how could you resist those jowls?! He's full of funny quirks that will keep you entertained throughout the day, and if you're looking for a golden boy to love on for the rest of his golden years, Ace could definitely be the one!
