My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Baxter! Baxter is a sweet boy who found himself in a big, scary, overcrowded shelter in New Mexico when his owner passed away.

Farfel's got an email plea to help save Baxter's life, and we knew we had to help this sweet Aussie mix. Baxter was a shelter staff and volunteer favorite, for good reason!

Baxter is a 2 year old, 50 lb Australian Shepherd / Red Heeler mix, and dang is he just beautiful!!

The following is the info that we have received so far from Baxter's foster mom:

* * * *
"Baxter is a handsome boy and he knows it! He is as smart as he is charming and he’s an absolute gentleman! He gets along with all other dogs, takes treats gently, catches treats, and is great on a leash.

So far he seems potty trained.

He gets along really great with other dogs small and large anywhere outside the home; walks, hikes, dog parks, daycare, etc.

Inside the home he still gets along well with my dogs, but he does have some resource guarding so he needs to be fed separate or just in a home without another dog so he doesn't have to share his food or treats.

Baxter LOVES the snow, and loves going on walks and playing with other dogs. He is a very social guy!"

* * * *

When Baxters owner was found to have passed away, he was found chained up, and had a cut from the chain on the bottom of his neck. This wound is healing up, but we ask that Baxter only is walked on a harness and NOT a collar so it does not re-open his wound.

We'd like to place Baxter in a home where he'll get consistent stimulation, exercise and love. A (virtual or in-person) positive reinforcement group training class promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt to a family that doesn't make this loving choice. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area.

Baxter is up-to-date on his vaccines, has been fully vetted, and is neutered.

Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial.
Farfel's Rescue has been doing adoptions this way since 2005 and is thrilled to adopt out ~400 dogs each year.
