My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

After spending a portion of my life living outdoors with much of it on my own, I am now realizing
that having been rescued by humans was not such a bad thing. Even though I do not have as
much freedom as I did, I do have a roof over my head and food in my stomach.

I did not know how to interact with cats and other dogs at first. Having learned that they do not
seem to present any eminent danger, I do not mind their presence but have not quite figured out
how to interact with them. Sometimes they, as well as humans, move a little too quickly for my
comfort. For now, I may need a home without small children or a lot of high-energy activity.
I truly believe that I have made a lot of progress in learning how to live within my new world but
also realize that there is still room for improvement. In an environment of patience and
continued love and encouragement, I hope that in time I will become much more comfortable
accepting love and care from humans.

I know that I will need some training in simple commands but I am really quite smart and have
already figured out daily routines like how to make it known when I need to go out to potty
(house broken). I walk well on a leash and LOVE my daily jaunts. Even though I do not challenge confinement such as
fences (no digging or jumping) and crates (actually I rather like the security of a crate at times), I
find that I do sometimes yearn for the freedom of the great outdoors.

If after learning all of this about me (and it's a lot!), you feel that you would be willing to open
your heart and your home to include me in your family I would love to continue my life journey
learning how to be a well-adjusted loving presence in your life.
Hope to hear from you soon!

Vixen is four years old and weighs 42 pounds.

More about this shelter

We promote the humane care of all abandoned and stray animals in our community. We are a no-kill shelter. All of our pets leave the shelter for their forever homes micro-chipped, up to date on vaccines, and altered.

Founded in 2002, Helping Strays is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization supported entirely by donations.

Our lucky animals receive appropriate medical care, are featured on the Helping Strays website "adoption list" and are taken to several adoption events every month in an attempt to find permanent, loving homes.
