History- Toby and his sister were given to a woman visiting friends in Mexico. She was told they were Shih Tzus however Toby is quite big and doesn't really have the coat of a pure Shih Tzu we are thinking he's a mix. Everyone who has met him thinks maybe he is part Corgi and when we looked it up he does look like that mix. Anyhow, she brought them home and loved them to pieces. However, she surrendered Toby due to his neediness and separation anxiety. He absolutely loves attention and stays with his person/people like glue. He won't even stay outside without his foster mom being with him.  He still has some separation anxiety but it's not terrible. I crate when I leave and he barks but stops after some time. Toby is the sweetest dog ever and loves his people he knows however he does not care for strangers so will bark and keep his distance - he takes a while to come out of his shell. So whoever comes to meet him must understand that Toby isn't going to just go right up and start loving and playing with them. He will bark and keep away for the most part. Though he does seem to warm up to children a lot quicker. So someone has to be prepared that he won't be his self on the first meeting however after the first night and some fetch and treats he will be in your pocket like he was always yours. He absolutely loves toys!! Loves playing fetch and loves doing his commands (he knows sit and come perfectly) for treats. He is just such a doll. His hair doesn't seem to grow much - he seems to be the wash and wear type of dog - I have not given him a haircut since he got here and he looks the same.

Temperament- Super sweet and very loving. Loves, loves, loves attention! He is super cute and playful and is the type of dog who just wants to be with you all the time. I never have to worry about him straying far or running away as he always sticks pretty close. When we are outside he just follows me around whatever I'm doing even in the garden and if he can't get in the garden with me to water he will cry. But he isn't destructive and just waits for me to finish so I just let him.

Energy Level- Very playful and absolutely loves his toys and playing with all the dogs here.

Dogs/Cats- He has met the other dogs and cats and is just lovely with everyone.

Housetrained- He hasn't had any accidents since he got here however his owner did say he still had some accidents but is pretty much house trained. He is also crate trained and does perfect going in when told as long as I have chicken for him.

Toby is a sweet, wonderful little boy who would make the perfect addition to any family wanting a sweet boy to follow them around. He is higher energy and loves to play and chase his best friend Daisy around. He loves his toys but will snap at Daisy if she tries to take them. He could play forever with his toys- his favorite things right now are small face squeaker balls. He is just a happy little guy who would be an awesome addition to any loving family that wants a sweet gentle playful boy to hang out with and understands that he is a perfect boy once you get to know him- he just has some issues with meeting people initially. Not aggressive just shy and will bark- his last owner was a man and loved him dearly and was really good with him but he does seem to have more of an issue with men than women and children. He loves the foster mom's grandchildren when they go over to the foster home and will follow them around and play with them all day if he could. he walks great on a leash and has some belongings from when he was returned. (He was adopted and returned after  months due to some major health issues within the family)

Adoption fee $250 includes neuter, age appropriate vaccinations (4 for puppies), deworming, microchip, 3 yr rabies, hw test (neg), collar and leash, training information, and all the support you need as well as his belongings that came with him when he was returned.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting from us but have questions please feel free to e-mail us at adopt@almosthomenm.org

In order to start the application process you must send us an e-mail request for an application. We will e-mail it to you as soon as possible. Then just fill it out and send it back via e-mail. Once we receive it then we can schedule an appointment for you to come out and meet the animals.

We are not an open to the public facility with specific hours of operation. We are a foster home and therefore require an application submitted before an appointment can be made and directions given out.

If you would like to adopt from out of state then you must be willing to come out to meet and adopt the pet you are interested in.. We do not ship pets nor will we meet someone somewhere.. We want adopters to come out and spend at least an hour with this pet in their environment before adopting just to ensure there is a connection. We would hate for the adoption to not work and be so far away.

More about this rescue

We are a newly formed rescue in Peralta, NM. We are still very small and currently in process of getting our 501c3 tax exempt status. It is mainly just myself, my two daughters and a small group of volunteers. We only take in animals from shelters who are scheduled to be put down. All animals are housed in my home and on my property. We started this rescue due to the simple fact that there are so many wonderful dogs dying everyday at the shelters because there just isn't enough room.We do not discriminate against any breed. Every dog has the potential to be a great family pet, working dog, or therapy dog- just as every dog has the potential to become a "dangerous dog" due to the simple fact that they all (or most anyway) have teeth and can bite when provoked or trained to obey their owners commands.
We do it for the love of the animals and the need to find forever homes for the ones impounded due to no fault of their own.
