The week of March 18th, a Good Samaritan found little 6-year-old Dragon while he was on a run. He was dragging himself along a dirt road in Hesperia, and his little knees and feet were torn up. The Good Samaritan rushed him to the vet where x-rays identified a broken spine.
We received some messages about him and offered to take over his care. We had high hopes that we would take him in for an MRI, stabilize his spine, and make him all better. We took Dragon to a specialty clinic for a neurological consultation, and unfortunately, we learned that his spine was fractured with zero chance of return of function, and it could not be repaired surgically.
Dragon is not in pain, and we are keeping him clean, comfortable, and busy with enriching activities. We bought Dragon his own wheelchair, and he uses it well! He enjoys going on our weekly FFF hikes as a passenger, taking in the sights and getting lots of pets along the way.
Dragon also enjoys going on outings and is a perfect restaurant date!
Dragon has been living in a Foster home for the past month and doing great! Thanks to his foster mom, we have learned what he is like in a home environment, and his future family can know what to expect in terms of his care.
"Oh my, Dragon is delightful! He is a very good boy. He is a smart one, too. He found his way out the doggie door on his own! He loves being outdoors and laying in the sun. Dragon sleeps quite a bit and loves to snuggle up on his bed and in blankets. He sleeps through the night.
Dragon likes attention, being held and petted. When I leave him at home for a few hours, he greets me at the door and actually does some circles and wants to play. He is such a good boy!
Dragon gets along well with my small dog and 2 big dogs. He does bark at anyone new coming to the door or in the house. I've used a water squirt bottle to help train him to not continue to bark at people who come over and saying "NO." It has worked! He is bright and trainable.
Dragon is a little bit of extra work due to his back legs being paralyzed, but it's very easy in my opinion. He wears a diaper for pee and a drag bag to protect his legs. It collects poop, too. Bags are easily washable. Dragon has cream for any abrasions on his legs from dragging them. I give him a bath every 3-4 days, and bath time is easy.
Dragon is a great hiking buddy despite being paralyzed. I took him with me on a hike to Boden Canyon, and he was so content to ride in a carrier on my back.
Dragon is such a joy to have around!"
Dragon is back on-site and ready for his forever home! Swing by to meet this special boy during Open House on Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm!
