Meet Stephen
FELV+ CAT SEEKS SANCTUARY OR SOLO CAT HOME!!!
Meet Stephen. Stephen has been through the ringer. Petting him, you instantly feel every muscle in his body. His head is like a big hard rock, albeit a very scratched, beat-up rock. Stephen's body tells us the quintessential story of a Tom cat who's had to survive for a long time outside by himself. He was found under someone's trailer in Osceola, and when neighbors didn't know him, he came to us. He came intact, but the strange thing is, Stephen has a microchip. We don't often see cats chipped without being fixed, but on top of that, the chip is unregistered. So, at one point, Stephen may have had someone who cared about him, but we have no way of finding them.
That's not even the saddest part of Stephen's story. It turns out he's FeLV+. Stephen has feline leukemia virus, which is highly contagious to other cats, transmissionable through saliva, close contact, bites, and even sometimes just sharing the same dishes. It is not transmissionable to humans, dogs or other animals.
Basically, this means Stephen can't live with non-FeLV+ cats. We need to find him a sanctuary housing other FeLV cats, or an adoptive home with either no other cats or only FeLV cats. We'd love to do this soon, because until we do, poor Stephen is stuck in his intake kennel and can't frolic freely in a colony with the other cats.
FeLV cats often have shorter lifespans, but can still live relatively normal, healthy lives. Despite all he's been through, Stephen has been nothing but sweet, calm, kind and gentle. He's now neutered, his chip is ready to be registered to a new family, and his wounds are healing. He loves people and enjoys sitting like a loaf and being pet. We've said this before, but we adore sweet, crusty, former Toms. They're often the most grateful for a second chance, and Stephen is no different.
