My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Atlas is currently in foster; if you'd like to meet him, call the shelter to schedule a meet in the foster home!

Hello, my name is Atlas and I am a big-hearted big guy looking for a new home. I weigh about 93 pounds so I may not qualify as a lap-dog but I do believe I could add love and sunshine to your home. I did have a person for a while and we were incredibly happy but unfortunately the home situation changed and I came to WCHS. I had a great setup and was respectful enough of my human's things that I was able to roam about the house freely when I was alone. I also had a crate that was my comfy and cozy little private den at night where I could relax and sleep. I had learned to find my person and put my head on them to ask to go outside to do my business. Even though I am house-trained it would be wise to give me plenty of opportunities for potty breaks when I get into my new home until we learn each other's routines and signals. I used to live with a couple of teenagers and that was nice because they could take me for walks and play with me to keep me active. I appreciated that they were old enough to understand that I am not a fan of hugs or restraint. I am a friendly, playful and affectionate lad but do need to get to know someone before I get all snuggly; you cannot blame a guy for having discriminating tastes and being a little choosy about who I cuddle up to. In my previous home I did have play dates set up with some neighborhood dog buddies and that was a load of fun. My only experience with felines is that I discovered it was a hoot to bark at and chase the outdoor cats who lived nearby. I am a very smart guy and know tons of cues. I am familiar with ‘sit', ‘down', ‘shake/paw', ‘stay', ‘come', ‘kennel up', ‘outside', ‘do your business', ‘leave it', ‘watch', ‘quiet', ‘shake it off' and ‘nose down' which told me to get off the counter. I enjoy learning and like to keep my mind busy and active so it would be lovely to get involved in nose work, practice tricks training or participate in touch or targeting exercises. I think it is always fun to play a rousing game of fetch. I certainly hope I sound like the kind of pooch you would want to meet; it would be grand to become part of your family.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Visit the shelter. We have an application that takes about 15 minutes to fill out once you have found a pet you like. You call back the next day which gives us time to review the application and gives you 24 hours to think about your decision to adopt. You can also complete our on-line application and get approved in advance of finding the perfect companion. Once approved, you are able to adopt an animal the same day.
